So here is the what things are doing now:

when I set the view files to include extension in windows (the "my computer" window) the files behavbe normally

When I set the view files to the default (hide extensions of registered files) text files do not upload properly (I have not yet tried any of this with other file types) but instead are reported as errors by the client, and show up as empty files on the server. There is an example of such a one in my mailbox on the telefinder server (this BBS)

I cannot reproduce the earlier problems where the files uploaded properly, but could not be read using the BBS--right now, either the upload fails with an empty file or succeeds, and this depends on what the view file settings are in the client WIN95 machine.

Finally, version 3.1 of tfclient does the file transfer thing correctly all the time.

Since the default in Win95 is for the extensions to be hidden, it seems to me that the telefinder client ought to unhide them before it uploads files. Telling every user to set their desktop to the non-default behavior is not practical.
