Well--anything is possible--but if such were the cause, then it seems to me that it must be in the original code (in the sample template), because I can get it to happen there simply by backspacing over a single space. I also typed the code in several times and, in any case, this would have showed up in my html editor.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time (I wish I did) to revist this at the moment. I think anyone can reproduce this this simply by going into the spml page, backspacing over one or more of those infamous spaces, and seeing what happens. Where possible, I try to report problems in a way that anyone can reproduce them--I hope easily and I hope someone does this. Until that happens, I have to resign myself to the fact that this question will go into my list of unanswered questions with the hope that, as it sometimes happens, these "non-bugs" will disappear without explanation in maitainence releases. I will be happy if that happens in this case.

I don't understand it, but it seems to me that somewhere in the final release stage of version 5.7 something--I don't know what--maybe RT bought a new buggy compiler, or maybe this has something to do with system 8.5 compatibility (I run 8.0 or 8.1) --I don't know--but there have been nagging problems, crashes etc that simply had not been there throughout the beta process, right up to the Frec releases almost--for excample I am now having problems with crashes and other buggy behaviors when restarting the BBS during realm and directory changes, and problems with HDS--problems that simply were never there before. There were other problems with SPML commands, with properly uploading .txt files etc., and most have been corrected, but it makes me nervous about as yet undiscovered problems because my continued success here in my job is highly dependent on these web servers running like a public utility. As I wrote these lines, the infamous spinning beach ball came up on screen for 1 min or so (hopefully RT was holding down a menu at the other end or something)

To be fair, 5.7 also is very stable when it is left alone--it appears to operate extremely stably without crashing (it operated without stop from December 2 until January 20), provided you leave it alone--as soon as you try to change the server settings--wow--problems--I have gone back to restarting the computer after each change. It reminds me of how things were when I was trying out BIAPChat.

Same as above, at some point I just hope that the reports are seriously investigated and corrected in some (hopefully near) future release.
