Rusty,

The problem with the Modem Setup/Settings Info DLOG "Baud rate:" continues to create a problem for even our seasoned BBS users, who recently have upgraded to a 56k modem (from 28.8) because A) they know it can be upgraded to V.90 specs soon and B) they want at least a shot at 33.6k connections, now fairly easy on the ASTEC BBS.

The problem is one of understanding the difference between DCE and DTE bps rates, which our Macintosh business users don't (and why should they?) understand. We've been recommending the Motorola ModemSURFR 56k units, avialable from PC Connection for about $116 including shipping. An excellent modem for the cost! (In spite of Jack Rickard's opinions expressed in "THE 56K MODEM BATTLE" in Boardwatch magazine)

When our user's install the modem (which supports a 230.4kbps DTE) they always use the 57.6k setting, since that must be the correct setting for their new "56k" modem, right?

You see the problem. A number of our clients have purchased new modems in the past two weeks, only to complain about the lack of speed they don't see. It's bad enough that we had to publish the attached, to help solve the problem.

You really need to revise the Modem Setup/Settings Info DLOG to keep this from being a continuing problem, that results in poor modem performance when it shouldn't.

Regards,

-Rod
