Another avid TF user's opinion here.. Have a logon message, one time only, reminding users how to tell if they have email, etc. If they reply, confirming that they've read and understood the message, fine. If not, do an auto mailbox popup thingie on every logon until they get the message. Or perhaps a system message saying "You have x new emails in your mailbox".
