I used to be involved in uploading web site info to HP and how they did it (But on a IBM PC Clone running HP Unix) was to have what they called a FTP Sandbox where you uploaded your web site in tar and gzip format (Both available on a Mac) and digitally signed the zip so there was no dought that it was from you. They would then poll this directory and by looking at the digital signiture would know where to unpack it (all off the self programs). This was before Microsoft Frontpage
I believe TFS could go one better in that it wouldn't need to have a program continually monitoring a folder and slowing everything down. But instead would call a script or program to carry out the required actions.
The benefit of course of uploading compressed archives rather than whole folder structures is the speed.
