Yep, that's basically the principle behind the Helpers. You're talking about taking a step out, which is a good thing too.

Since Netscape can't even keep up with HTML....

In fairness, Bill probably has HTML 1.0, or 2.0 in mind. If so, why not go the other way around? Make SimpleText files that TF will display and use the "Preditor" plug-in to display them on the web as HTML.

Better yet. HTML should be a fundamental datatype that is supported by MacOS. Just like Bitmaps, Pictures, and Styled Text. Lobby Apple to make this happen.

MacOS should ship with "SimpleHTML," not SimpleText. TeleFinder is not the only application that would benefit from being able to edit and render HTML. Far from it. In fact its difficult to think of an application that would not benifit from that. Email, Database, Finder, and thosands of custom apps, all would be better with HTML processing.
