We aren't using FreePPP, we have a 64K dedicated ISDN connection. I confirm your finding on the FreePPP, and it even works with FreePPP 2.5.2 and OT/PPP 1.0.1, however, it is unstable for us.
We are running a very stable and very clean system, with hardly any extensions and certainly nothing corrupt. NNTP Sucker locks up tighter than a drum when it is launched a SECOND time. It works fine the first time. We've tried all different kinds of configurations. The problem is related to OT 1.1.1 and higher, as confirmed by the author of the software. <<
I am running it here. check out the attached pict. Note the version of Open Transport in use...
Perhaps the problem is related to hardware and load order... I know that it is working for me - Not always, but most of the time. I am launching server applications MANUALLY, and with some delay over and above those of a mass launch done with script or executable scheduler.
