Subject: Dedicated TCP Slow Transfers

I was not sure where to post this, so I posted it here since it has to do with data tranfer problems from the server to the internet.

I am connected to my ISP (cin.net) with a dedicated line and having retransmit (outbound 30% to 100%) problems and hangs.

--------------------------

scenerio #1: data x-fers inbound from internet (TCP)

data transfers inbound to the TF server/bbs (209.158.53.2) from the LAN from the router (209.158.53.1) from cin.net from user on the internet operates at 0% to 10% retransmits and 80% to 100% maximum through put on the user side. This is acceptable!

--------------------------

Scenerio #2: data x-fers outbound to internet (TCP)

Data transfers outbound from the TF server/bbs (209.158.53.2) to the LAN to the router (209.158.53.1) to cin.net to the user operates at 30% to 100% retransmits and then hangs the user.

Those transfer usually start out at 100% data through put for the user then drops to under 300cps and then hangs.

--------------------------

Scenerio #3: data x-fers inbound/outbound LAN (TCP)

Data transfers inbound/outbound to/from the server to users on my LAN (209.158.53.3 and .4, .5, .6) operates above 40Kcps (in busts; never more than 80Kcps) with 0% retransmits. I don't know if this is standard or even near the maixum for a 10T Ethernet LAN but for me it has been acceptable. (By the way, what is a firewall and do I need one???? I only have macs and virtual PCs on my LAN).

-------------------------

Scenerio #4: data x-fers inbound/outbound ISP/PPP from 209.158.53.3 and .4 at the same time:

data x-fers (as measured from the PPP user on the internet) was maximum for both with only 0% to 30% retransmits in both directions. This was between 0:00 through 0:15 hours this morning. At 0:20 hours, once again started getting 30% to 100% retransmits from the server (outbound to the internet).

-------------------------

I suspect my router, or DSU or TELCO boxes. But, could it possibly be Open Transport? Was using Mac OS system 7.6.1 and OT 1.1.2; Upgraded to Mac OS 8.0 and associated OT/PPP stuff. Problem still persists <sp>.

Or could it be a problem with TF Server/bbs?????

If it is the router or DSU or TELCO boxes, How do I convince my ISP of this since I just purchased them from my ISP a couple of weeks ago.

By the way, the phone company also had a problem on my dedicated line. They had to repair a phone box out on the street because there was smoke coming out of it. (I live in a back water town about 100 miles SWW of Chicago). After they repaired the box, my not being able to get to the internet problem was corrected, but now I have these times (90% of the time) that I get 100% retransmits with data outbound to the internet. Only 10% of the time am I totally retransmit free with outbound data.

Please help, as I have to much invested to let this go bust.

And, frankly, I can't see how it could be the server.

Ken.
