Subject: Where do TF Modem Strings Come
Date:Fri, February 27, 1998 08:49 PM

Okay, it's time to reveal my ignorance, but at least I admit what I don't know...

Where do the modem strings provided with TF/User come from? Why are they different? What is the "common denominator" they are trying to achieve?

There, I have that off my chest. However, the reason for asking is to help users of our BBS with their connection problems. I inherited this about 6 months ago, and even before then I heard rumors like, "Oh, I can't connect to the BBS because my modem string is screwed up", or "They don't have one for my modem...what should I use?" Many people view these modem strings as voodoo incantations, and reading the Hayes AT commands is less than an enlightening experience to anything less than a certified modem-head. What criteria do you guys at Spider Island use to concoct these strings? Do you test each brand and speed individually, or are you trying to get them to speak in a common fashion? And most importantly, how is the lowly end user who is frustrated out the whazoo supposed to find a solution for this seemingly esoteric problem (other than "Try another string until you find one that works!")? Maybe I missed it in the documentation for my modem or the server software, but unless a little more light is shed on this topic, there will continue to be a lot of cursing in the darkness.

Any answers? Thanks!
