Subject: Where do TF Modem Strings Come

Where do the modem strings provided with TF/User come from? Why are they different? What is the "common denominator" they are trying to achieve?

We put those together here at Spider Island to configure the modem

a - to operate in a way that is compatible with TeleFinder.

b - so that the modem works to the best of it's abilities!

We then test the settings to be sure they work. Sometimes adjustments are necessary if the documentation is bad.

If the modem setting specifically for your modem does _not_ work well it could be:

* That there is a 'bug' in the modem setup. This is the least likely possibility, especially if you use a common modem. This problem would affect all users of the same modem setup.

* You should be using the HH settings if you have a newer modem that come with it's own cable.

* Make sure that you have the modem mfrs. current set of ROMs! The modem makers are always coming out with new ROMs to make their modems work (better).

* If you have a US Robotics modem, you should turn DIPSWITCH #1 to the IGNORE DTR position.

* If you want to adjust the strings ( usually on our advice or the modem mfrs, make a new setup so you can go back the the old one. )

* Switching to another string is usually the wrong thing to do, unless your modem is not listed. In that case start by trying the Hayes Optima 144 - HH or 288- HH. For USR modems try the Courier 144-HH setup. Some modems work with the Microcom-HH settings.

* If your modem is not listed, please send us its manual and we'll make a custom setup for you.

If after all of this the modem is still not performing well, you really need to talk to the modem mfr. This is because by this time, it's probably a modem compatibility problem.
