You are looking at a special PBX system with custom phones to use features other wise unavailable. I would guess it is NOT digital, else it would have fried your equipment or vice versa. Check the documentation of the PBX to find out whether and how one can connect a traditional handset (usually does work somehow) and do just that with your modem.
