Sysop's with OPTIMA 288

We have been running the v5.42 ROM's (current shipping product) in our Hayes OPTIMA 288 modems and noticed that with a new client using a USR Sporster Vi 33600, our Hayes modems were taking some 15-20 seconds to go on-hook, after we had seen the Server issue the "disconnecting" message.

In discussing this with Hayes, we were advised that the USR does not understand a protocol shutdown, such as the Hayes and many other modems do. (the OPTIMA has the protocol (V.42) tell the remote side to shut down when the ATH command is received or DTR is dropped in &D2 mode) With a USR, which doesn't support this, it results in a delay while the Hayes modem looks for a dial tone and several other things to confirm that the carrier is gone.

A quick way to reduce this delay with a calling USR is simply to use S38=1 in your Server modem setup, as S38 is normally 20. This will cause your OPTIMA 288 to go onhook after one second. This is not a new trick, as we've been using S38=1 on our OPTIMA 288 modems calling various ISP's, CIS and AOL who use USR modems and you sometimes see the delay when you hangup.

FYI... the v5.42 ROM's improve V.FC connections, for callers who are still running older V.FC and haven't upgraded to V.34, or have the very early V.FC/V.34 implementation ROM's, in what ever brand modem they are using. The early PPI 28.8 FXMT with v3.1x ROM's is an example.

Rusty and Chris - On a related note, you need to revise the MDM# resource in Server 5.0 to support the 33600 bps DCE speed, since we will no doubt have Sysop's running these modems.
