Bettie,

Andy is correct in that the modem settings may be fouled up. For a Mac the command you want to send (for many modems) is AT&F1, then AT&W to save the commands out. That will restore the modem to factory settings for a Mac (using a terminal program). For a PC, you want to send AT&F2 and AT&W to save the settings out. AT&F for many modern modems will turn off all compression and and other features. Sometimes that will give the user better than he is getting but that is just because the modem init string is improperly configured.

The other thing that Andy or I didn't mention is that on a Mac you need to have a hardware handshake cable. There are modem cable test program I think in your Telefinder Utils that will help eliminate that problem as well (0n Macs). RTS/CTS should be turned on and Xon/Xoff turned of on most terms for example.

Telefinder comes with as good a set of init strings preprogrammed in for most modem types, but there are so many on the market and the technology is still changing. Usually if you want detailed help and suspect the modem init string as a problem you need to make sure you identify the modem and the type of machine it is running on. Also make sure your user has the latest version of TF software and the latest modem datafile for their systems to start with. That takes care of most of the problems that my users have had.
