We are trying to put a dedicated web server on line with the following hardware and software: * Mac IIsi * Spider Island Telefinder * Open Transport 1.1.2 * Open Transport/PPP 1.0.1. * SupraExpress 56, SupraExpress 33.6 and USRobotics 56K modems have been used at the local site and the ISP uses a USRobotics Courier modem.
The most consistent problem encountered at this time is lack of stability or repeatability of the connection; we can't make and/or hold a connection. We have followed very carefully the manufacturers instructions and procedures for setting up Telefinder, PPP, TCP/IP and modems. The modems apparently talk to each other, but disconnect in about two minutes with the notice that the modem is not responding properly (error codes 98 and 99). Sometimes we make a successful connection then, shut it down to change only text in the web page, and then are unable to re-establish a connection.
Our ISP, World Data Network, admittedly has had no experience with Apples, but they assure us it isn't their problem. We need to identify the problem and the solution.
Any suggestions for … technical solutions, … persons to contact for help, … a local ISP with Apple experience (Washington, DC), or … a consultant would be appreciated.
