I have come across the same situation earlier, AskDesignateFile() nav API holds up the dlg if we try to replace, In this case i found the following solution:
Set the dialogOptionFlag = kNavDontConfirmReplacement and check for designator.IsReplacing() return value, according to the return value you can put your own alert instead of Nav defualt error message. So you can have the full control on your own alert . See if this can help you.
