Not sure if this is so obvious you've already tried it, but have you
considered only letting the hard disk sleep, while keeping the system
running continuously? This is what I do on several Macs that either
don't go to sleep, or don't wake up when they do go to sleep; I just
let the disks and monitor go down but keep the CPU/mobo power up.

It's not as efficient, but it works. (I assuage my guilt by running
Boinc in the background; YMMV.)
