so it's recognizing that the system is bootable (when it puts up the
icons) but when it tries to boot it fails, so it really isn't bootable
after all. it sounds like it's corrupted somehow.

you'll need to boot off a system disc to see what exactly is going on,
and possibly reinstalling the system. it's also could be that there's
disk corruption which could be fixed, either with apple's disk utility,
or alsoft's diskwarrior.
