Hmmm. It appears that the problems are mostly with the FW800 drives, or
exactly the ones you want and I don't have. Which goes a fair way towards
explaining why I didn't (and still don't) have any problems.

The only FW800 drive I have is an old LaCie d2 250 GB unit. I'm waiting for
the power supply to go belly-up on it, and will probably replace it with a 1
TB Seagate or WD. just not a dual-drive RAID Seagate or WD. Given past
experience with LaCie power supplies, I'v got 18-24 month left before it
dies.
