Check your "about this mac" and system profile for info about the RAM you have. If the RAM is the right speed and has the right number of pins, it should work.
I bought some laptop RAM for my MacBook. It was PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 pin. It was about half the price of "Mac laptop RAM" and a quarter of the price of Apple RAM.
In the olden days you also had to worry about voltage and parity and error correction but we're pretty much past that these days.
