For starters, if it's a FW800 model, it would have an FW800 port in
addition to the two standard FireWire (FW400) ports

Well, I think it must be in this family:

That means it _should_ boot OS 9, so we're back to surmising that you're
not using an OS 9 CD that supports this model. As I recall, it requires
OS 9.2.2 and a standard retail version of OS 9 could _not_ be used with
the MDD. Instead, you would need to use the discs that shipped with it.
