Problem is not stuff in the Inbox --
1. I don't leave stuff in there.
2. I can access mail in the account folder (that would have gone to
the Inbox) by going directly to ~Library/Mail. In fact, I've aliased
that folder to my desktop so I can doublecheck.
What seems to happen is that mail goes into a folder (that used to be
a mailbox) in the Inbox but can't be accessed from Mail, only by going
directly to the Library folder.
And no, I'm too cautious to automatically delete files from the
server; every week or two I go into my ISP's Web front end and delete
Trash from there.

BTW -- I'm running OS X 10.4.11 -- Mail may play different games in
different versions if anyone else is reading this.
