Double-weird. Acrobat itself was behaving oddly, too. Every time it was launched, it demanded an administrator's authentication to modify Acrobat. Whether given or not, it seemed to work OK.
Now I've upgraded again, and not only is that fixed, but Preview works again. That one version of Acrobat must have tampered with some bundle or framework that Preview needed.
Preview would launch and then freeze: "application not responding" in the Dock pop-up.
