1. Fast, Elegant, Innovative...and Coming Soon

At the Worldwide Developers Conference last week, Apple offered
developers a sneak peek of the next major release of Mac OS X.

We code-named it Jaguar.

Scheduled for release late this summer, Jaguar will bring you a
series of exciting new features. Take, for example:

* iChat. Instant messaging as it was meant to be, iChat will let you
use your mac.com account name as your "handle" and converse with
buddies on AOL.
* Sherlock 3 will offer a sensational Yellow Pages channel--among
others--complete with maps and driving directions.
* Address Book. You'll no longer need to search everywhere for your
contacts. With the new Address Book you'll have a central
repository for all of them including all your iChat buddies.

And that's not all.

2. Short or Tall, iMac Accommodates

While some like to stand, others sit up straight and a few of us
even slouch. Anyone do all of the above?

That's what's so great about the articulated neck on the flat-panel
iMac.

No matter how we like to work or how many times our posture changes,
the iMac display accommodates, gliding effortlessly into an almost
infinite number of positions.

How adjustable is it? You can tilt the display forwards or backwards
a full 35 degrees. Raise or lower it--it adjusts up to 7 inches. Or,
for those who like to share, you can also rotate it 180 degrees from
left to right.

We should all be so adjustable.

3. eMac: Choose Your Startup System

In addition to iMovie, iPhoto, iTunes, AppleWorks, QuickTime,
Internet Explorer, Mac OS X Mail, AOL, World Book Mac OS X Edition
and other utility and productivity software, every eMac ships with
both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.

    http://www.apple.com/education/emac/software.html

As a result, your eMac computers can run all the great new software
becoming available for Mac OS X as well as the great Mac OS 9
applications you already own.

To make it as easy as possible for you to set up the eMac computers
you order for your school, we've created configurations that will
startup in the operating system you prefer--Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X.

4. New Features Sharpen iPhoto 1.1

You said you'd like to

    * Email a photo to a friend with one click (using Mac OS X Mail)*
    * Adjust brightness and contrast in Edit mode
    * Search for photos by Keywords or Comments (set your
     choice in Preferences)
    * Pick a photo for your desktop
    * Create a custom screen saver with a single click
    * Show all EXIF picture data

Now you can do all of the above--and much more--thanks to the many
new features we've added to iPhoto 1.1. Snap up your copy today by
visiting our iPhoto website.

* You'll need access to email and an account with an Internet
service provider to take advantage of this feature.

5. Grace Under Pressure

Think your college entrance exam was tough?

To qualify for admission to the University of Sheffield, Matthew
Pitts-Tucker had to sit next to a boiler and under a creaky theater
stage when he took his exam. It gets worse: he spent a whopping 20
scorching hours there while he produced a one-and-a-half minute
animated film.

But none of those distractions flustered this lifelong Mac owner.
After all, he had a pair of invaluable assistants that kept him
focused and helped him achieve an "A" grade.

iMac and iMovie.

"iMovie performed brilliantly," he says. "It's so easy to use, yet
you can do really elaborate things with it. You can basically teach
yourself to use it."

6. Underwater Adventures with iMovie

The kids couldn't wait to find out. Would their seafaring heroes
find the elusive Pompeii worm?

No, it wasn't an after-school TV show they were following. They were
immersed in the exploits of a group of undersea researchers on a
17-day mission: the Extreme 2002 expedition.

Each day, the researchers explored the Pacific Ocean floor and
documented their findings with digital camcorders. Back aboard ship,
they edited the footage with iMovie and transmitted the clips via
satellite to their landlocked webmasters, who quickly updated their
site with new video.

Says project director Tracey Bryant: "Without the Mac platform,
there would have been no other way to do this."

7. Technically Speaking

Someone just sent you email with an important Microsoft Excel
document enclosed. Thing is, you don't have MS Excel, so you can't
open it.

But wait: AppleWorks came pre-installed on your iMac, and the latest
version--AppleWorks 6.2.4--can read and write Microsoft Word and
Excel files. In fact, this new version offers enhanced formatting
tools, downloads Internet templates more quickly, provides enhanced
support for FAXstf, and more.

Which version of AppleWorks are you running? Pull down the
AppleWorks menu and choose "About AppleWorks." If the version
number is greater than 6.0 but less than 6.2.4, surf to our
Knowledge Base and download this free update.

8. Quick Takes

No bolts are required for WingNuts.

But you will need Mac OS X v10.1 if you expect to defeat the evil
Baron Schtopwatch and his fleet of robot planes, and as you can see
from this QuickTime trailer, WingNuts' arcade action really soars.

MATLAB is coming to Mac OS X with the next release of the MathWorks
product line later this year. MATLAB integrates mathematical
computing, visualization and a powerful language to provide a
flexible environment for technical computing.
