they're due to come out today, when the highly-anticipated animated
film from Pixar, Monsters, Inc., opens in theaters across North
America.

With its stylish black and white cinematography, Dragnet-style
narration, and a convoluted plot with more twists and turns than a
California coastal highway, the Coen brothers' new film "The Man Who
Wasn't There" is a paean to the American film noir genre.

In this dark-yet-comic morality play, Billy Bob Thornton turns in a
low-key (and distinctly Bogartesque) performance as Ed Crane, a
laconic small-town California barber who blackmails his wife's boss
after he discovers the two of them are having an affair. Before
long, Crane's scheme spirals out of control, setting in motion an
unexpected series of consequences.

"The Man Who Wasn't There" will delight fans of classic 1940s-style
crime thrillers. Watch for it in U.S. theaters on November 9.
