<<<Well if Apple is to stay even closely competetive they have to let everyone that wants to make a clone do so. Heck if some companies don't make it and go out of business that's just the way it is. I say let everyone make clones, and of course Apple get royalties. Flood the market with Mac's like PC's and may the strongest companies win : )>>>
I agree. Actually, the way I see it, most of Apple's problems can be laid squarely on the shoulders of the Performa line. They're not only BIG-TIME money losers for Apple (recently, at least), but they're also the source of most of Apple's recent negative publicity (the problems with the 5200/5300/6200/6300 machines) and also their huge stockpiles. When Apple signed its agreement with PowerComputing, it was planning on doing just what you mentioned above. However, Spindler pulled BACK right after signing with Power Comp. because he felt it would endanger the performa line (which was NOT a big money-maker anyway). That's the main reason Power Computing is the only clone maker that is undercutting Apple's prices. Apple should have signed the "Performa" nameplate over to some other company and let them take care of that segment. Apple seems to be too big a company to keep up with the speed bumps they should be, especially in the low-end of the market.
