This announcement is from:
Dennis Vogel, <dennis_vogel@foresight.com>
Programming 4th Dimension - The Ultimate Guide, from Foresight Technology, is the comprehensive reference guide to designing and programming the 4th Dimension database environment. The book contains a CD-ROM featuring code libraries, example databases, and electronic source code, as well as numerous general utility methods.
Programming 4th Dimension is written to benefit both beginning and advanced 4D users. Less experienced users will appreciate the plain language explanations of basic concepts including data structures, caching, queries, and programming style with practical 4D examples, and without jargon. Intermediate to advanced users of 4D need a book to introduce and demonstrate advanced capabilities such as custom data caching, and data integrity management. Everything from field types and relations to compiler methods and resources is covered in detail and accompanied by expert tips, step-by-step instructions, and real-world advice. Designed for both Macintosh and Windows users, the book covers the newest release of 4th Dimension V6, and 4D Server V6, as well as 4th Dimension 3.X and 4D Server 1.X.
The cross-platform CD-ROM included with Programming 4th Dimension contains code libraries with ready-to-use source code, documented example databases, and over 50 cut-and-paste utility methods. Partitioned for Macintosh and Windows users, the CD-ROM also includes source code for routines covered throughout the book. Loaded with hundreds of dollars-worth of code and utilities, Programming 4th Dimension The Ultimate Guide will save its users hours of development time.
Programming 4th Dimension The Ultimate Guide is now available for the suggested retail price of $139 from Foresight authorized resellers and direct from Foresight. For more information, customers may call 1-800-701-9393.

SQUEEM Software announces another MAJORLY AWESOME update to it's popular software venture "Debt Wizard v2.3 Professional" by this emailing. I humbly ask (borderline on beg) that you take whatever actions you can, as you have done in the past, so we may share this piece of QUALITY shareware with the Macintosh public. Please feel free to review, advertise, or at the very least announce this release. Full details may be found at our Debt Wizard WWW page......
<http://www.squeem.com/dw.html>
Feel free to contact me personally with any questions, feedback, or concerns you may have at
<shane@squeem.com>
A brief description follows:
Debt Wizard has been called "the perfect complement to Quicken." Debt Wizard is the essential program for one who has debts, the more the better. Most personal financial software focuses their time on storing current information about several accounts. Although this is an invaluable resource for simplifying the organization of many debts, it does little in the way of identifying, illustrating and solving financial problems. Debt Wizard helps minimize the financial devastation from these revolving credit debts.
Version 2.3 Includes these 5 new MAJOR features: -----
Optional Colorized Schedule and Plots Dynamic account updating (not available on ANY other Debt Reduction Software) Now you can account for special "no payment" specials Customizable schedule duration limit United States and Canadian Amortization Calculator Optional interest display in payoff schedule
- --also--
Added a much needed progress bar while generating schedules Fixed several "minor" bugs that occurred in unique situations
- -----[ historical changes ]-----
Version 2.2 Includes these 3 new features:
New Pay in this many months based on interest generator Minimum Payment schedule generator significantly enhanced statistic tool window which allows comparisons
Version 2.2 fixes the following bugs Error when people using 68k Macs registered Possible crashes when using the software extensively over a long period of time Eliminated an error that could occur in the Interest Calculator.
Version 2.1 Includes these 13 new MAJOR features:
New "Pay in this many months" Schedule Generator Will take into account Introductory APRs! New High Balance Schedule Generator Takes into account reoccurring charges. New Low Balance Schedule Generator Can include static accounts (i.e. rent) Payoff Schedule Statistical Tool Window Make one time payments (i.e. tax returns) Widget to easily calculate Minimum Interest May manually prioritize your debts Easy to read "real" month/year scale Include payments from external sources Instructions in hyper-linked, HTML format
I ****SINCERELY**** thank you for your consideration in advance. !!!!!!!!!
TraceMate(tm) is a software toolkit to manage and flexibly communicate "itemized, link-intensive" information. TraceMate's engaging user experience is very similar to outlining, but items are grouped and sorted by type, category, priority, and linkage clusters, rather than nested outline levels.
TraceMate's key advantage is to summarize information using custom filtered link tables (a.k.a. cross-reference tables, traceability matrices). TraceMate will also export a multiply-indexed HTML file, which is great for off-line browsing or read-only information sharing.
TraceMate should appeal to entrepreneurs, product designers and developers, consultants, or some combination of the above. BUT, TraceMate is pretty easy to use, and works just fine for brainstorming or linked note taking (e.g. my friend who is an aspiring author uses the software during story plot conceptualization).
TraceMate can be purchased, then immediately downloaded today. For more information, please visit <http://www.endrun.com/tracemate/learn/>. For system requirements and purchase instructions, please go to <http://www.endrun.com/tracemate/buy/>.

Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 02:10:44 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - everchanging FilePad 1.6 Beta 1 Available
Keyword: Newton
This announcement is from:
John Anderson, <anderson@everchanging.com>
everchanging is gearing up for its release of the first update to FilePad since 1996.
FilePad, formerly designed and marketed exclusively by HealthCare Communications, was the first flat-file database for the Newton. Version 1.6, due to be released in May 1996, has recently entered beta testing.
With FilePad 1.6, everchanging continues its mission to blah blah blah blah blah. Does anybody actually read this far down a press release?
FilePad 1.6 is now compatible with the Newton 2.1 operating system. The updated MacOS version includes FilePad Coordinator, an application which synchronizes FilePad data with FileMaker Pro 3.0 or 4.0 databases. Starting with version 1.6, FilePad will be distributed electronically as shareware.
"Just tell people where to get more info, and where to sign up for the beta program. Don't bore them with a long, drawn-out press release. And by the way, don't print this," says John Anderson, President and Big Cheese at everchanging.
For more info about FilePad and other everchanging products, point your Web browser at <http://www.everchanging.com/>. If you wish to become a beta tester, send a message to <beta@everchanging.com>.

Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 02:10:59 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Tidbit - Faculty Research Database Success Story
Keyword: Advocacy, Macintosh in Action
This tidbit is from:
Stephen Moore, <moores@odrge.odr.georgetown.edu>
I work with a team of two other educational/computer specialists (Dave Zapple and Steve Smith) at Georgetown Univ. Medical School. We have about 200 devoted Mac scientists here and enjoy having a few Mac admistrative offices as well. In 1994 we developed (on the Mac) a comprehensive Faculty Research Database application that handles all aspects of research-oriented processes e.g. tracking grants, protocols, faculty interests etc. We ported it over for Windows users, but have maintained cross-platform Mac/Windows versions with a determined Macintosh philosophy and devotion.
Since we began we have also been able to license our system to the Univ. of MD at Baltimore and the prestigious Jesuit National Conference. We will soon be licensing our products to the Univ. of Pittsburgh. In all of these opportunities it was the availability of the Mac version of our system that gave us the competitive edge over the other Windows-only based higher education research administrative systems.
Thank you Evangelistas and all the Apple folks for your support. We invite you to visit our non-confidential Georgetown MedNetwork web-enabled database at <http://mednet.odr.georgetown.edu/>. Search on last name "Dretchen" as he is our boss as well as the Dean - and he uses a Mac!

I work as a system administrator in the local branch of a big company and have installed Eudora Light on all the macs here getting the mail from a unix box with a pop3 server running. Now the guys from our headquarters want me to switch over to MS Exchange.
I don't want to do that for several reasons but their main argument is that I have to be compatible with the directory services of Exchange which will be maintained centrally. If I find no way to comply with that, I will find myself installing and maintaining an NT server.
The unix box I'm using as a server runs FreeBSD but it would be ok to install a mac with EIMS, either. What I need is any kind of centrally manageable directory services for Eudora Light along with a bidirectional gateway to Exchange's directory server. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Date: Fri, 20 Feb 1998 02:11:02 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Seeking Beta Testers for PageSplitter(TM) Beta
This request is from:
Kelly Breit, <kelly_breit@worthington.com>
Worthington Software Engineering is preparing to release PageSplitter(TM), a new Macintosh product at the Spring Internet World, March 9-13, 1998 and looking for additional beta testers immediately.
PageSplitter(TM), is a new tool we've created for migrating graphic designs into web pages. With many designers dissatisfied with both the limitations of image maps and the tedium of the alternative - breaking images into rectangles that can be loaded into table cells, then writing the HTML for tables and JavaScript to make it all work, we created a utility to automate the process.
Simply put, PageSplitter is a "assembly" layer for images, HTML areas, animation areas, interactive areas and text; and a generator of all the images, HTML and JavaScript necessary to run that site. The goal is to cut 75% of the production time of assembling the site.
As a precaution, the documentation is still being developed, so not all the features will be immediately obvious. We would like to hear your opinion about the value of the product, limitations of the product, competitors to the product, and pricing.
If you are interested in participating in the beta, please email me your name, organization, mailing address, phone number, fax number and email address and I'll send you the instructions for downloading the application.
Send all requests to <beta@PageSplitter.com>.
Sincerely,
Kelly Breit

Andrew Grimes, <grimes@ghgcorp.com>
To everyone that responded to my posting in EvangeList #1083 about Macintoshes having problems downloading email from my ISP's mail server.
I have had so many responses that I can't possibly respond to them all one at a time. For a summary of the helpful suggestions and answers to questions I've gotten, and general status on the problem, check out this URL:
<http://www.ghg.net/grimes/evangpost.html>
I will be compiling the information over the next few days and posting it there. Hopefully I can find an answer to it, and can not only help myself out but also the other people that have said that they have the same problem!
I never expected to get so many replies...Thank you!
