It's hard to prioritize what possessions are important when forced to
evacuate from a disaster, as was the case when my home in Upper Canyon 3,
Rio Nido, California was hit by a massive landslide. Of course, I had
already moved my Mac out because of frustration with lost services. Days
after the slide, I was able to resolve difficulties for press credentials
when I developed an affiliation to deliver photos and QuickTime VR
content for a Bay Area news service. I was accompanied by a camera crew
to guide them into the disaster area and provide interview segments of
the event. Upon entering the upper story of my home, they observed a
Wintel machine sitting on the floor in a corner of my home office. They
asked, "Oh, are you a PC user?" I replied, "No, no-no-no -- used to be,
but then I wanted something I could use." They laughed and told me they
were Mac users also. As I scooped up a few possessions, they asked if I
wanted to take my Windows machine out? I replied, "I think a warm coat
might be more useful. Somehow, a Wintel box sitting in a corner, waiting
to be buried by a predicted 250,000 additional tons of mud seems an
appropriate end."

I have my Mac, and I have enjoyed the company of other Mac fans! I have
found the proverbial silver lining within an event that I can now say, IS
NOT, a *complete* disaster ;-)

Subject: Tidbit - Free Scripts for PageMaker

This tidbit is from:

Marc Zeedar, <pmscripting@svprint.com>

Graphic designers who use Adobe PageMaker are invited to visit the
PageMaker Scripting Center. It's the only website exclusively devoted to
scripting PageMaker using PageMaker's proprietary scripting language,
AppleScript, HyperCard, and Westcode's One Click.

There are dozens of free scripts ranging from the immensely useful
(character styles, replace one color with another, replace one font with
another, etc.) to the silly (the world's first PageMaker-based game).

All scripts are free and we welcome contributions from readers.

Visit the PageMaker Scripting Center at:

Subject: Tidbit - Non Mac Server Dancing Icons Problem

This tidbit is from:

Larsen Dena, <Larsen_Dena@prc.com>

"Dancing Icons"

Readers report the triggering with Mac OS 8.1 of a previously existing
AppleShare client/server problem. The problem occurs with AppleShare
servers on non-Mac platforms, such as Linux, Windows NT and Novell
Netware. When the server volume is mounted on the Mac client, file icons
in the server window "jump" or "dance" around, such that normal Finder
operations - selecting files, for instance - becomes a problem.

Netatalk 1.4b2 patches address the problems with that Unix server.

Eddie Bowers created an unofficial Windows NT 4 server patch (see
www.macwindows.com for more details). Two official NT 4 hotfixes,
Jump_A.zip and Jump_86.zip, reportedly are available now via Microsoft
phone support, but are not posted on Microsoft's website.

Leland Wallace (AppleShare IP Client Lead at Apple) described the source
of the problem:

"The 'dancing' icons problem mentioned with Clients 3.7.1 - 3.7.4 is due
to an interaction between the Mac OS 8 Finder and the NT Server. The NT
server is not saving the Finder Info that the Finder is updating, causing
the Finder to redraw the items each time it revisits them. The version of
the AppleShare Client has no effect on the problem. We are working with
Microsoft to resolve the problem."

Joe Ragosta, <joe.ragosta@dol.net>

"Developers are abandoning the Mac in droves" is one of the FUD items
that people are using to fight against the Mac. But when pressed, they
can't usually provide any evidence of that.

Today, someone on comp.sys.mac.advocacy pointed out that this week's
MacWeek had an article about Sybase dropping the Mac and challenged me to
show that developers were adding the Mac. It was a pretty stupid
challenge because the same MacWeek had _five_ articles about companies
which were converting their formerly PC only products to PC plus Mac.

This is a general trend. I read MacWeek religiously, and there are
vendors adding Mac products almost every week. The number of companies
who are actually dropping Mac products is miniscule in contrast. So when
someone says developers are leaving the Mac, ask them for evidence.

This plea for mercy is from:

The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>

Okay, here's the scoop -- I started to run into problems with one of my
copies of Claris...I mean, Apple...E*Mailer where it would crash after
launching. So the dance began...a clean system installed (I was way
overdue for that anyway...I play with too many beta and earlier versions
of software :), a fresh initialization of the hard drive, and so forth.

Somehow along the way I managed to lose 4 days from my backlog (which
I've only caught up with this past weekend). Based on what I have listed
the 14, 15, 16 and 17th of February either didn't happen or were sucked
into the bit bucket. My best guess is that I accidentally swapped an
earlier version of the mail database with the current one (D'oh!).
Ironically, since I do daily backups and it was several days before I
caught the problem all of my retrospect backups were "updated" with the
same wrong version. Call it the more vigorous application of Murphey's
law. :-/

If you sent me something during those four days, please take the time to
resend it, and accept my humble apologies.

Subject: ;-) - UFO Mac?

This completely absurd tidbit is from:

Larry Roth, <rothl@wadsworth.org>

I was reading the March 1998 issue of Flying magazine and got a surprise
when I reached Russell Munson's article "Flying the Mojave". In one of
the photos was the carcass of an ancient compact Macintosh. Munson had
been sight-seeing in the desert, and found it near Giant Rock. This is a
place that has been the scene of many UFO sightings over the years, and
Munson comes up with some interesting speculation.

"I don't know whether extraterrestrials ever landed out there or not, but
I can tell you this: I personally saw the remains of an ancient Apple
Macintosh computer lying on an unusual rock formation not far from Giant
Rock. One must wonder, could that computer have been used for
intergalactic navigation aboard an alien ship that landed on this site
decades ago? Wait a minute, you say, that's impossible. The Mac didn't
exist until 1984. Yeah, right, it didn't exist--here..."

Hmmmm!

Subject: !! - Steve Jobs Goes To Washington?

This action item is from:

John Farr, <jhfarr@applelinks.com>

This came to my attention while editing the daily Apple Computer News for
Applelinks.com <http://www.applelinks.com/> today:

Senator Hatch has asked Bill Gates, Scott McNealy, and Jim Barksdale to
testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 3.

This Reuters article <http://www.internetnews.com/Reuters/congress.html>
reveals that Hatch intends to ask them to tell the committee all about
the latest Internet technologies. In light of the ISO's adoption of
QuickTime multimedia standards (and a thousand other reasons), shouldn't
Steve Jobs have been invited to speak?

Shouldn't polite, literate, concerned members of the Macintosh community
contact Senator Hatch and tell him of their concerns? His e-mail address
is <senator_hatch@hatch.senate.gov>. Be nice!
