This request is from:
Fred G. Martin, <fredm@media.mit.edu>
I need to convince a V.P. that it might be a sound business decision -- no "doing good for the Mac community" stuff -- to make his product run on Mac.
MacWeek is reporting Dataquest's estimate's of Apple market share for 1997. One of the figures is 5.5% for the home market.
Now, I know the situation is better than that -- because of the installed base.
The product in question requires a pretty high end machine -- i.e., either a PowerMac or a 133+ MHz Pentium. PowerMacs have been selling since 1994, and most of 'em are still alive and kicking.
Can anyone point me to reliable numbers of Apple's share of installed base? In other words, how many of those 20 million+ Macs are PowerMacs and are in people's homes, versus how many Pentiums are out there in homes. __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
This is a perennial request, I know...but I *still* haven't seen installed base numbers for DOS, Win 3.1, 95 and NT as compared to Mac installed base numbers. Who's got the definitive independent resource for this that even the most biased will have to accept?
The MacOS Buyer's Guide is a easy-to-use resource when buying a MacOS system (clones and Apple). It not only lists all vendor's systems on seperate pages (listed by price) but also lists ALL Mac-systems by price and by MacBench processor score. Improvements have been made to make the site easier and simpler to use. The URL is:
<http://www.enproindia.com/macguide/>
Key new features include:
- - All pages up-to-date - - Listing of all systems by price page has been improved - - Listing of all systems by MacBench score has been added
If anyone has any tips, please feel free to e-mail them.
Also, I am looking for a sponsor for the site as the previous sponsor's commitment has ended.

This request is from:
David Barto, <barto@rabbit.visionpro.com>
I have a Centris 650 that we have been using as a WWW/ftp server using a famous shareware solution.
Now the president has given me ~$450 to find a REAL product for WWW and FTP. The president is a windoze centric fellow, and is concerned that the mac may have reached its 'end of life.' I've made my case that it still has years of use as that ftp/WWW server and I need the product to prove it.
Some requirements: The WWW users must not be able to see any of the ftp users accounts.
No ftp user should be able to see any other ftp users accounts or be able to look into those accounts. Currently we are using file-sharing to protect users and set up a complex set of aliases to enable the administrator to be able to go to a specific users account without having to know the actual folder the users account is in.
It would be nice to get rid of this tom-foolery with the new product.
The new product must also be able to do statistics about how often and from where we are getting hits.
I'm sure the list will be able to recommend the product that they use, and I'll send back a summary of the 'most used web/ftp server for the mac' after the major flood of replies subsides.

This follow-up message is from:
Kevin Green, <mr_fix_it@earthlink.net>
I day-trade for a living. I am an independent trader. I do it solely for myself. I'm in and out of trades all day long. I trade at a Block facility in Irvine California. Block allows traders access and use of their equipment and gives tremendous support for basically commissions costs.
They use; CyberTrader and PC Quote Real Tick 111 software, a Bloomberg Data feed and Penson Financial Services. At this time, this is the best combination available that I am aware of.
Believe it or not, I'm still waiting to receive reply's from my request from some of the software manufactures.
The Mac software program will be used to do research with. It will need to be able to scan a stock list "looking" for specific chart set-ups using filters and screening procedures. Plus alot more... Most promising thus far are:
- - ProTA Gold - <http://members.aol.com/beesoft/gold.html> - - Mathemamtica / Technical Trader - <http://store.wolfram.com/view/trader/?3492FE-262C> - - Investor/RT - http//www.linnsoft.com - - Trendsetter - <http://www.trendsoft.com> - - Dial / Data - direct dial up download service - <http://www.tdc.com>

This request is from:
Roger Young, <natzeno@aztec.co.za>
It's A LONG story how I got to this point but thw short version is that in test running Office '98 somehow all my ATM sets preferences (as well as a lot of other stuff) dissapeared (the behomoth also crashes, causes unmapped memery exceptions and collides with open transport).
I have over 1500 fonts collected from various resources slowly over the years. Now I have to re cataloge them !!! The thing is that I really don't need all these fonts, let alone the nightmare and time spend of trying to re-sort them all.
So, what I was looking for was some kind of app that would allow me to view the font and then let me either keep it where it is or move it, either to another folder or the trash. Is there anything out there that can do this ?

This follow-up message is from:
Derek K Johnson, <LordofRISC@aol.com>
I found (after an hour of searching) the following address that would be very useful to include in all evangelist mailings regarding the distributed cracking effort. It tells how to join a team!!!
Mini FAQ on How to Join a Team
<http://www.distributed.net/FAQ/teamfaq.html>
how many people are not on the team because they don't know how to join?
BONUS MATERIAL:
A brief tutorial on getting started:
once you download the RC5DES software and launch it the configuration page should open, if not then use command-k of the configure option in the file menu, enter your e-mail address.
after that choose run from the file menu, if you use PPP software it should automatically log on (if you use AOL it may be necessary to log on with AOL first), and the client will download the number of blocks you have selected in the configuration under General.
then select run from the file menu and kick back and watch your computer do it's thing.
then it will send everything off and download more and start all over again. this will continue until you hit stop.
Does anybody have any optimal settings for configuration of the client? (work smarter not harder) what are some typical settings?

Date: Thu, 26 Feb 1998 14:11:01 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: Followup & !! - Mail to Senators - Snail-mail is Best
This follow-up message and action item is from:
Eric Hamilton, <ehenning@flash.net>
While in the digital age it has become popular to send off e-mail at the slightest provocation, a note of caution should be had when it comes to our representatives in Washington.
In a recent article in on News.com: <http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,19480,00.html?owv> the point was made that many, if not most Senators are not truly ready for the digital age, and that a lot of mail is not read, but just trashed.
So, if you want to impress Senator Hatch, using your printer and a stamp and send him a real *snail-mail* letter. That ought to get his attention. For those who think it will take too much time, just remember that you are probably wasting your time writing that e-mail that will never be read and takes not space to store (relatively) and is as easy as a mail filter to trash.
The address for Senator Orin Hatch in Washington is:
Senator Orin Hatch United States Senate 131 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, DC 20510
The mail takes only a few moments to put in an envelope and send off, and its effect is infinitely more powerful.
__________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Eric is right... I knew this, and completely forgot. I've become so dependant on e-mail (I mean, even my mother and father-in-law are using e-mail these days :) that I forgot this odd idea that doesn't have the same impact as a letter does. Thanks for the address, Eric! EvangeListas - -- Let's bury the senator in dead trees. ;-)
