A friend at Microsoft asked me to post this to EvangeList.
I have been using Word 98 for several months now, and it's very well done. The background spell checking and grammar checking and the ability to draw tables are very cool. I've cut over a 200 page document, Rules for Revolutionaries, from Word 6 with no problems at all.
Some EvangeListas may have some "religious issues," but I'm telling you: Use the best tool for the job. For writing a book, I think it's Word 98.

Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
Microsoft officially launched Office 98 Macintosh Edition at this year's Macworld Expo in San Francisco. Office 98 represents the most significant release ever of Office on the Macintosh platform and includes new versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Furthermore, Office 98 also includes a new Internet email client, called Outlook Express, as well as Internet Explorer 4.0 for Macintosh. In Office 98, you'll find virtually all the features of Office 97 for Windows, plus new, advanced functionality, available first in the Macintosh version of Microsoft Office. And for the first time in history, Microsoft is also releasing an additional version of Office - Office 98 Macintosh Edition GOLD - that includes all of the Office 98 applications as well as FrontPage for Macintosh, Encarta 98 Deluxe, and Bookshelf 98.
Apple has talked a lot lately about "Thinking Different." We at Microsoft have also been thinking differently - Office 98 represents the first time ever in the history of Microsoft's Desktop Applications Division that an entire organization, our Macintosh Business Unit, was devoted exclusively to creating great Macintosh software. Today, Microsoft has over 200 people working on Macintosh products, the largest Macintosh software team in the world (outside of Apple, of course). Recognizing that our Macintosh customers had different needs and expectations, we conducted extensive customer research (we appreciate the many Evangelist members who replied to our web survey on what it means to be a great Mac app!), and worked hard to create a product that reflects your needs.
Our first design goal for Office 98 was to create a great Macintosh product for our Macintosh customers. Rather than being a port of a Windows product, Office 98 is a Macintosh product from the ground up, built for our Macintosh customers, and based on your input and feedback. For example, Office 98 is fully integrated with the Mac OS 8 appearance so your software looks like you would expect from a Mac application. In addition, Office 98 now supports key Apple technologies such as QuickTime and QuickTime VR (in Word 98, Excel 98 and PowerPoint 98) as well as Macintosh Drag & Drop making it easy to take advantage of your system and integrate with other Mac apps. Furthermore, since Word 5.1 is so popular with our Macintosh customers, Office 98 provides great support for Word 5.1 users so if those users want to continue using Word 5.1 interface (ribbon, ruler, etc.), they can select the Word 5.1 Menu mode and continue working in a familiar environment. Word 98 also brings back the popular font menu from Word 5.1 and makes it even better so it's WYSIWYG - - you can see what your font looks like before you apply it. Finally, innovations like Drag-and-Drop Install and Self-Repairing Applications make upgrading to Office 98 simpler than any previous upgrade. Both Drag-and-Drop Install and Self-Repairing Applications are only available today in the Macintosh version of Microsoft Office.
In addition to being a true Macintosh application, our second design goal was to make Office 98 significantly easier to use and more discoverable - making it simple for users to quickly figure out how to do what they want to do. End users will find tasks like creating tables to be just as easy as using a pen and pencil. And repetitive tasks like Spell Checking become automatic with built-in IntelliSense that edits in the background so you can focus on your ideas. Office 98 also includes ease of use innovations only available in the Macintosh version of Office such as Quick Thesaurus which provides easy access to word alternatives.
Our third design goal was to make it easy for our customers to share information and collaborate with their colleagues right from within the Office applications. You'll see that powerful collaboration tools like Shared Workbooks in Excel 98 allow multiple users to collaborate simultaneously on the same document - regardless of operating environment. In addition, since many of our Mac customers share files frequently with Windows users, we have utilized the same exact file format as Office 97 for Windows meaning you can seamlessly create, collaborate and share information across platforms. Finally, Office 98 also includes powerful web technologies which allow our customers to create rich web documents right from within the Office applications.
Microsoft Office 98 will be available from your reseller in late March - or you can pre-order your copy today and view a multimedia autodemo at the Mac Office website located at <http://www.microsoft.com/macoffice>.
Finally, a note about our partnership with Apple...in developing and marketing Office 98, we have worked very closely with Apple to ensure that we understand Apple's direction and the needs of our mutual customers. Some of you may have seen us during Steve Jobs' Macworld Expo keynote where Steve and I unveiled Office 98 Macintosh Edition. You can expect this close collaboration between Microsoft and Apple to continue in order to develop the best Macintosh solutions possible for our customers. Today the powerful combination of Office 98 and Apple's G3 machines running MacOS 8.1 is a testament to the fruits of a strong, growing relationship between our two companies.
We at Microsoft are committed to continuing to develop great Macintosh products for our customers, and Office 98 and Internet Explorer 4.0 are just the first example of this commitment. So drag-and-drop away, and enjoy Microsoft Office 98, Macintosh Edition.
Sincerely,
Ben Waldman General Manager Macintosh Business Unit Microsoft Corporation

I have 36MB of (real) RAM, a zipdrive, a 2x CD drive (soon to be upgraded I hope), 512K VRAM (also soon to be upgraded I hope), a K56Flex (56Kbps) modem, Color StyleWriter 2500, Turbo Mouse 5, PlainTalk Mic, 256-color monitor, Mac OS 8 (soon 8.1), 160 MB HD (soon anywhere from 700 to 2 GB - we'll see), Tex-Edit Plus 2.2, BBEdit Lite 4.1, LocalTalk network (consists of the Performa, mom's PowerBook 1400, and my MessagePad 120), GraphicConverter 3.1.1, etc. etc. etc. What is so astounding?
My system is a 4-year-old Performa 475.
To borrow a line from Scott Adams: "Go ahead, read that sentence again. I'll wait."
This computer is 4 years old, being maxed out everywhere you can think of, and is STILL kicking PC - errm, you know. ;)
The computer has over 60 extensions and 30 control panels for various chores/fun gizmos, including Open Transport 1.2 (with OT/PPP 1.0.1), Kaleidoscope 1.8.2, Okey Dokey Pro 2.0.2, Speech Mgr., etc.
The three (system ["Brain"], applications ["Hands"], and documents ["Fingernails"], in order of each body part's product) hard disk partitions never have enough free space. (Big surprise. :)
File Sharing/AppleShare 8 are used to transfer files between PowerBook and Performa. Newton Connection Kit 2 transfers between Newton and Performa.
Well, I've killed enough mail servers, so I'll cut this short. If anyone wants to ask further about my setup, email me: <macrulez@softhome.net>. :)

Bill Croninger, <BCroninger@MAILBOX.UNE.EDU>
Hello all, has anyone run across high quality anatomical clip art for the Mac? Many of my fellow profs and I would love to have a collection of images that could be used on handouts and in tests.
Have seen a number of clip art collections but most would seem to be consumer oriented. We would need images that are accurate anatomically. Thank you for any leads!

Simon Coles, <simon@nipltd.com>
The popular groupware package Lotus Notes is available for many platforms. The Mac version of Notes is an excellent Macintosh application, and Notes's support for the Mac has enabled organisations to capitalise on the Mac's superiority by allowing users of different platforms to collaborate.
Lotus and Apple have been running a useful web forum for people who use Lotus Notes on the Mac. Unfortunately, this is due to close, so we've started a mailing list to replace it.
Here's the details:
NotesMac on <notesmac@lyris.nipltd.com> (Lotus Notes on the Macintosh)
Server address: <lyris@lyris.nipltd.com> List address: <notesmac@lyris.nipltd.com>

This announcement is from:
Taylor Design, <support@taylor-design.com>
Taylor Design is proud to announce the immediate availability of List Pad 1.0, a flexible, easy to use list manager for Mac OS (680x0 and PowerPC). To celebrate this new release, Taylor Design is offering a limited time special on List Pad: Buy List Pad 1.0 for only $11.95 through March 31st, 1998.
List Pad is a flexible yet easy to use data management utility with powerful filtering, sorting, alarms, price calculations, and categorization features. List Pad is similar to a to do list manager but far more flexible. List Pad can handle virtually any kind of short to medium length data list, and is designed to handle data too long and complex for Note Pad or a text file yet too short and simple to warrant pulling out a full blown database. Straight forward operation, dozens of user preferences, a slick user interface, and a low price make List Pad the premier Macintosh list manager.
List Pad is currently available as a feature limited demo. The time limited demo of List Pad will be available within the next few days. With either demo you can buy List Pad via phone, E-mail, FAX, or postal mail, and have your unlock code in minutes (via the first 3). This request is from:
telling.c, <telling.c@gjpoland.com.pl>
We get a lot of outside advertisements as PDF files, but in order to 'mount' them in a layout, we have to either rip them to TIFF or EPS, since Quark can't import the PDF (yet?). Under WinNT and Unix, we've seen a new tool from Helios called PDF Handshake, using their own OPI system, to create low-res previews and then convert the PDF to Postscript on the fly from the print-server. We don't need that much, but just an Xtension or plug-in for a Mac-based OPI package (we use Color Central, CanOPI and PrintDesk in our studios) to do the same thing. Anyone have this problem and find a simple solution? The work/time involved in converting all PDF's to TIFF/EPS for Quark is driving us nuts... and PDF was supposed to make things easier? :-)
