"NASA, the U.S. Navy, and university campuses throughout the nation were the targets Monday evening of "denial of service" attacks on computers running Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 95 operating systems.
"The attacks, waged over the Internet, made computers crash and caused what is known as the "blue screen of death"--a reference to the blue screen that accompanies Microsoft's "fatal error" message."
The article goes on to talk about the fact that this wasn't a "new" problem, but one that was fixed with a patch released in January. It's pointed out by one of the victims that there's a "steady stream of patches" coming from Microsoft, implying that it's not easy to keep up with the current version.

I just wanted to send message to all of the Mac faithful out there on the EvangeList and let them know of another great (hopefully) Mac resource that will soon be making it's debut in Atlanta, GA. If you live in or around Atlanta, then chances are you know WGST Radio (640 AM/105.7 FM). Well, WGST has an informative and entertaining computer call in show (although fairly wintel oriented) every Saturday morning from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM EST, hosted by Tom Caddoo. Tom, who works for the same company I do, realized that none of the computer call in shows in this market had any Mac segment or Mac know how and that it was time to change that.
This is where I come in. My name is Tyler Jones. I have been doing Mac hardware and software support professionally for a few years now and am admittedly addicted to all things Apple and Mac. This coupled with the fact that I had nothing to do Saturday mornings and a face that was made for radio apparently made me the ideal candidate. So, Saturday March 14th Tom and I will be doing a full hour dedicated to the Mac.
The future of a possible Mac segment as a permanent addition to Tom's show really depends on feedback from this show. Tom has been doing a great job promoting the idea every week on his show, but now I need a hand from all of you out there with a radio or RealAudio to make this endeavor a success. So Saturday, March 14th from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM eastern time please tune in your radios (640 AM/ 105.7 FM) or use RealAudio (there is a RealAudio link from <www.wgst.com>) and listen to our show.

Today, our Director of Resourcing and Organizational Development came into my cubicle with a CD in his hand. It was one of those gold recordable CDs that apparently had some data on it that he wanted to see. I was on the phone at the time, but I figured he wanted to see what it was that was on the CD. Something about our Corporate capabilities... He gave the CD to me and I inserted it into the CD drive of my 10-month-old company issued Compaq 5300 running Windows95. I double clicked on "My Computer", and then on the CD icon. The LED on the CD drive flashed, the window opened, and lo and behold, nothing displayed. He was VERY concerned. The window was empty and it indicated "0 items." Just so you know, I am running ConversionsPlus on this machine, so even if it was a "Mac" CD, I should have been able to see SOMETHING... and, since my Company is trying to be a Windows-only shop, the CD was meant to run on a PC anyway...
<yawn>
I took the CD out of the 5300, turned around to the Apple PowerMac 8100 running a Marketing web and ftp server and inserted the CD there. <BIG SMILE from me; concerned "what-are-you-doing" look from him while shaking his head>
This 5 year old machine is running 8.1, read the CD and showed all the stuff on it while the http, ftp and graphics caching applications is running (don't even think about trying that with a 5 year old wintel) AND several people were hitting the web server... The "application" was written using what looked like Director and uses QuickTime. There was a folder for installing Win95 stuff (if you can GET TO THEM!). Video was displayed accompanied by audio (including an introduction by our Company President). It looked and sounded great. Too bad the PC users can't do anything with it!
By the way, the reason this person came to me was that the CD did not work on his Windows95 machine either... and I used to be the Information Services Manager... he figured if anyone could get it running, it was me. Compatibility problems? Life Cycle cost issue? Ease of use? Not on Macs! (oh yeah, I am also on the Board of the Diablo Valley Mac User Group.)
Then I shared with him that because of all the lock-ups, freezes and crashes I get on my wintel machine, my productivity is about 20% less than what it could be... He even admitted he had similar problems... I asked him if it was appropriate to be wasting these types of resources: Time = Money. I told him he could do the math. So, if you happen to be in a situation like mine (I can get REAL work done on my Mac but forced to lose work and time on my wintel), be sure to point that out to the people who are in a position to make noise in the boardroom.

I have a friend of mine whose full-time business is the breeding of pigeons. After years in the "manual" mode, he is now on the look-out for a software (preferably Mac) allowing him to properly manage his business.
My understanding is that there are indeed some specifics for the breeding of the pigeons, but I guess any animal breeding software may already be a good starting point.
Any suggestions is welcome, I will summarize if there is interest.

We run a FM4 sales database with approx 35 clients. Most of these clients are running 7.5.1 or 7.6.1. Three are now running OS 8.0. For the past 4 years we've been able to print both contact letters (to a LaserWriter 630) and labels (to a CoStar LabelWriter II or XL). We use Quick Keys to switch to the CoStar driver via the "Choosy" extension in Quick Keys.
This had been working perfectly until FM4 came out. At that point Quick Keys was no longer able to make the switch (crashes FM or the entire machine every time). It took many phone calls, but CoStar finally admitted their driver was the problem. Around 6-8 months ago CoStar updated their driver to version 4 and that fixed the problem... under OS 7.x. We are now faced with the same problem under OS 8. I spoke with tech support and all I got was some crap about the shrinking Mac market and how nobody in the label business is investing in our machines. I was told to fax a letter. Wonderful.
Unfortunately CoStar never implemented Applescript/AppleEvents into the stand-alone label printing application which comes with each printer. If that were the case you would not be reading this note in the first place.
We are faced with a huge dilemma. Does anyone know of another label printer that will work for our needs? Does anyone have a work around? Could the CoStar label printer be addressed directly via a FM4 plugin? Thanks in advance.

First, a Force-Feedback Joystick gives resistance and vibrations during game-play to simulate a more real experience while gaming (like it may jerk while you are flying a plane and got hit by a missile). The popularity is growing in the PC market, and there is no Mac version of this product.
I have been in an email discussion with a large joystick developer for the Mac (maybe the largest) about the production of a Force-Feedback Joystick for the Mac. The results of which ended up:
* The Mac hard-core gamers market was too small to support this type of joystick, and * If there were software to support this type of joystick, they may consider making a Mac version.
So, I am appealing to all Macintosh Game Developers to send me email specifying what games you develop and that you would be interested in adding force-feedback support to your game. I will compile the list of developers and games and forward it to Joystick developers for the Macintosh platform.
