I got my copy of NetworkNews UK Edition today, I thought you might like to know what it said - <Headline> We don't trust NT
Forum user meeting declares NT insecure Robert Jacques, Senior reporter
"NT users have given Microsoft a hands down vote of no confidence on NT security."
In an informal poll conducted by Network News at Microsoft's UK headquarters, roughly 80% of the delegates at the influential Microsoft Windows NT Forum did not believe NT4 is secure."
The article goes on to say how Microsoft "despatched security staff to seize and grab our photographer's film and surpress this damning user evidence."
Next to the article is the offending photograph showing 4 people raising their hands to agree with the statement "...NT4 is secure connected to the net." I'm being generous here, one of them could be scratching his nose!
Also of interst in the March 18th issue (no123) is an article on the Cytrix WinFrame system allowing Macs and UNIX boxes to access Windows-based applications that reside on a server.

Nicholas Rhodes, <consult@iarchglobal.com>
Several months ago, we had a small information consulting company based in Southern Spain. We were also developing Smotel - a small hotel management package developed entirely in FM Pro 3.0. We submitted to this list some PR about Smotel and received hundreds of responses. Among the responses was a company very interested in investing in our software development (which was at that time a very secondary interest). This company has now placed their trust in us and we now have a whole new software division with dedicated programmers and international representative offices in several different countries.
Apart from Smotel (our highly successful Small Hotel Management Package, which is starting to ship), we also have IntelliProp (a real estate management package) and PubPro (another management system aimed at publishers and magazines).
To see our products and services and download demos, please visit <http://www.iarchglobal.com> and if you order any of our products, we offer all evangelists an additional 15% discount.

Date: Fri, 20 Mar 1998 02:11:06 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition
FileMaker, Inc., formerly Claris Corporation, has announced FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition, an essential database development tool kit for corporate and professional developers that runs on Windows 95, Windows NT and the Mac OS. FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition will give developers a wide array of 32-bit based applications and tools for compiling, debugging, developing, deploying and managing FileMaker Pro database solutions, the company said.
For the first time, the new version, scheduled to ship later this year, will feature an API (Application Program Interface) that will allow developers to write External Functions for FileMaker Pro databases, a capability that will greatly expand the core functionality found in the stand-alone version of FileMaker Pro 4.0, the company's award-winning desktop database software. In addition, FileMaker Pro Developer Edition will enable access to FileMaker Pro databases over Java-compliant operating systems, such as Unix and Solaris Systems, with the addition of Java classes.
The right developer tools for a wide range of FileMaker Pro user needs "Just as the stand-alone version of FileMaker Pro 4.0 now provides fast, powerful solutions for managing information of all types, FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition will make it much easier for the FileMaker Pro developer community to build solutions for enterprise workgroups and small to mid-sized organizations," said Dominique Goupil, president of FileMaker, Inc. "Using FileMaker Pro Developer Edition, professional developers can easily turn user requests into solid business solutions."
The new FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition API will allow developers to produce useful new external functions such as credit-card verification, complex scientific and financial calculations and graphical representations of data, many of which were not available before using FileMaker Pro.
"This API, along with the Java classes, thrusts FileMaker Pro into the core of corporate MIS suites by permitting rapid development of robust, diversified, sophisticated information management systems," said developer Steven H. Blackwell, president and CEO, Management Counseling Services, in Alexandria, Virginia.
Java developers, using FileMaker Pro Java classes shipping within the new Developer Edition, will be able to harness the relational power of FileMaker Pro to enhance their Java applications and applets.
Other features within the new version include an enhanced version of the FileMaker Pro runtime binding engine allowing for fast, low-cost deployment of runtime solutions based on FileMaker Pro. Offering greater GUI customization of the database, the runtime binding engine does not require users to install a full copy of FileMaker Pro. Also included is a complete Developer Tools Collection including Home Page Pro 3.0 (formerly Claris Home Page 3.0); Code Warrior Lite; thousands of buttons and backgrounds; more than 50 complementary third-party tools from leading FileMaker Pro developers; and Windows and Mac OS versions of FileMaker Pro 4.0.
FileMaker Pro 4.0 Developer Edition, to be priced at $499 (in the U.S.) and available through authorized FileMaker, Inc. resellers, will ship on a hybrid CD-ROM (Windows and Mac OS) allowing for easy cross-platform development. Windows requirements include an Intel compatible 486/33 computer running Windows 95 or Windows NT 3.5.1 or higher (with 8MB RAM along with a CD-ROM drive and hard disk drive). Mac OS requirements include any Macintosh, Power Macintosh or compatible running System 7.1 or newer, a CD ROM drive, hard disk drive and 4MB RAM (8MB required for Power Macintosh).
With three million units of software distributed, FileMaker, Inc. delivers desktop-to-Web productivity and creativity for customers ranging from SOHO to the enterprise. Its award-winning FileMaker Pro line of database software provides relational power, instant and custom Internet publishing and legendary ease-of-use. Its unique blend of power and ease has fueled significant growth: sales of FileMaker Pro for Windows have tripled in the past two years, complementing its long-time leadership among Macintosh database software. __________ This msg originated from the MacDev-1 listserv and was selectively redistributed on your favorite list -- EvangeList. Following my request to the list for Macintosh software suggestions for inclusion on the Internet Magazine CD there was a tremendous response. Their recent CDs had previously included some meagre token offerings on the Mac side and had implied that there was little available.....you proved them wrong! But better than that, they have fully acknowledged your contributions in the April edition mag and on their CD - Internet mag says:
"Mac users! Thanks for the tremendous response to our request for software submissions and recommendations. Sparked by the note in the February CD, many of you have now been most generous, sending links to archives, offers of applications for inclusion and recommendations of tried and tested Mac apps. We hope all Mac users (a growing section of our readership) find the software selection on this month's CD more satisfying than before."
"Thanks to all of you (including the 'Evangelist' mailing list) who responded to our call for Mac software to include on the Internet Magazine CDs - you proved that there is indeed no shortage."
And I say:
I know that many (most) of the email will have been sent by list members from the USA and other parts of the world, so you will not directly benefit from this UK publication....this can only be a demonstration of your true generosity of spirit...thank you all so much. If you still wish to suggest software for inclusion on future CDs the CD editor is: David Perry - <davidp@internet.emap.com> the editor of the magazine is Gail Robinson - <gailr@internet.emap.com>

This tidbit is from:
Teemu S A Masalin, <tmasalin@cc.helsinki.fi>
Hello, I just bought Sarah McLachlan's latest CD "Surfacing". The album is great and it also includes multimedia track with QuickTime video. I found out that this CD is made by some great Macintosh people. The following quotes are from the read me -file.
"Macromedia's Director 5.0 was used to create the multimedia program. Development is done on various Macintosh PowerPCs - everything from a 7500. 8100 and 9500. We also use Movie Cleaner 1.3, Adobe After Effects 3.1 and MoviePlayer 2.5 for the videos. You'll see Adobe Photoshop 4.0 work all over the place. All the text editing is done in ClarisWorks 4.0, except where we wanted to torture ourselves and did it in Photoshop or Director."
Then there is following comment about QuickTime:
"QuickTime is the most dependable cross platform video software we've found so far. Get this straight - QuickTime will not harm your computer in any way whatsoever, even if you don't know anything about Apple computers or have never touched a Macintosh"
Macintosh is the best!

D'OH!
I've had that «D for MONTHS. I didn't know it was enhanced!
Well, i just ran upstairs (working at home is a blast at times like this :), snagged the CD and ran back to my G3 enhanced 8500 to slip it in. A very nice enhancement to the CD material.
BTW, I did know that the "Freedom Sessions" CD was enhanced as well. Also very nice...I think Sarah (if I may be allowed the familiarity :) is definitely on the forefront of what you can do with enhanced CD's. One suggestion...LYRICS. :-)
Another interesting thing to check out...in the CD case, under the side where the CD is stored are installation instructions. The Mac has a single step for installation and running the ECD. Windows...well, five steps, with some of the steps having sub-steps.
