Lyon County School District, a rural district in western Nevada is looking for a Director of Information Systems. The district currently has about 1200 computers. 58% are Macs, 26% are PCs and the rest are Apple IIs and others. The applicant must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work with other people for training and support issues. He must be familiar with MacOS, Windows, Appleshare, Netware, and various computer and networking equipment. A background in MacSchool software would be extremely helpful, but not necessary. The district is very progressive and has done a lot in the way of technology. The office is located in a small town about 80 miles SE of Reno. I am leaving this position to open an orphanage in Ecuador with my family. I would really like to see a Mac advocate continue this position.

Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 12:30:58 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: PR - New Version 1.1 of KeyStrokes
Keyword: Market by market, Disability
David Niemeijer, <KeyStrokes@Niemconsult.nl>
KeyStrokes provides a fully functional on-screen keyboard that you can use to type with the mouse anywhere you would use a normal (hardware) keyboard (applications, dialog boxes, etc.). It also allows you to shift/option/command/control click. KeyStrokes 1.1 is FREEWARE.
KeyStrokes version 1.1 fixes amongst others the following bugs:
1) Now also has a moveable window on System 7.1 2) Now also works on black & white monitors
KeyStrokes version 1.1 has the following new features:
1) Has a preferences dialog box 2) New option: Keys are repeated when mouse is kept down on top of a key 3) More intuitive user interface 4) Collapse KeyStrokes window by double clicking in title bar 5) The RAM footprint of KeyStrokes has been reduced 6) Changed to probably allow better collaboration with new versions of TypeIt4Me
KeyStrokes is presently only available for the Apple Macintosh and Power Macintosh. It requires system 7.1 or later.
KeyStrokes 1.1 is available from our web site <http://www.niemconsult.demon.nl/KShome.html>

Date: Tue, 31 Mar 1998 12:31:03 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ;-) - Microsoft Patents Ones and Zeros
This tidbit is from:
Paul Costa, <3wv7costap@vmsb.csd.mu.edu>
The Onion, a great satirical newspaper in the Wisconsin and Illinois area, has a great story on the cover of the March 25 issue titled "Microsoft Patents Ones, Zeros." I'd call it a must read. It can be found online at:
In the end, the answer appears to be that there are no ADB wireless keyboards on the market. There appear to be mice from Kensington and Logitech, neither of which I could find in any catalog on the web. A few people mentioned a company called "BigTyme" or something similar. It appears to have had such a product but is not in business. Anyone know where to get some old units?
I wrote quite a few of the PC companies asking for Mac solutions, but none replied positively.
One of the more interesting things I found on the web was a guy talking about a unit he had purchased a while back (also refurbished) that input any ADB device and transmitted its inputs to the receiver at the mac. That would be very cool. If someone has the knowledge to tell me how to build an ADB send/receive system, I could try to build them to order.
Here are most of the responses (the one-dash lines are my comments):
- --- I have a Logitech 3 button RF mouse which has a receiver which plugs into the ADB port. I believe they still make it. Works beautifully.
- - I can't find this anywhere on Logitech's site or in stores. GLK
- ---
The only place I have found any cordless devices for the Mac were on a site called "OnSale.com", it is a online auction house. I purchased (placed a bid and won) ,a LogiTech Cordless Mouse, although it was factory refurbished. I have had it about one month with no problems (it does come with a 6 month warranty). Unfortunatly this is the only cordless device I have seen lately.
- - I went there and couldn't find any. If anyone sees them on the www, let me know.
- ---
The problem with IR port devices is the require a CLEAR line of sight and only have a capture angle of about 30 and a range about 2 feet
Logitech cordless mice are currently available at Comp USA and most mail order outlets (actually apparently Lochitech ONLY makes the Cordless version of the mouseman anymore) and is an RF device needing no line of sight to the reciever
- - If that were true, how come I can switch channels on the Mac from across the room? Couldn't find any at Tampa CompUSA.
- ---
You ask in USA for products which are manufactured in Switzerland! As John said: Logitech produces various wireless mouses, trackballs and others. They are customers of us and I know, that they produce wireless keyboards as well. There are, of course other manufacturers which produce the IR-ports for AppleTalk connections as well as wireless modems.
- - Noticed my e-mail address (I actually have a foot in both countries), but I couldn't find anyone that produces anything for the Mac IR ports (except, of course, IR networking stuff).
- ---
I saw your item on the Evangelist. MacWindows has a list of devices that let you use PC input devices (including wireless keyboards) on the Mac. The URL is <http://www.macwindows.com/keyboard.html>.
There is another solution: You can connect all kinds of PC keyboards with the E.Key adapter by Fesh!. Take a look at our website: www.fesh.com
- - This is true. I didn't want a mutated Windoze solution though :)
- ---
I believe that Kensington makes several IR devices.
- - Couldn't find any on their site.
- ---
We just bought several Logitech Mouseman cordless mice. The Mac version isn't mentioned on their web site, but it's definitely available. It's a nice unit, although Logitech doesn't seem to exhibit much Mac-commitment.
Logitec still makes a wireless mouse; we have some at CompUSA Nashville (or did earlier this week).
I just wanted to let you know that I have seen wireless kenningston mice for the mac at the computer store here at my university, McGill, here in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Let me know what else you find.
- - Where can these be mail-ordered?
- ---
www.wireless-computing.com
They make a wireless keyboard which sells for $399, if you read the fine print it says its will work with a Macintosh, but you have to buy the adapter, which is $199 extra.
- - Yes, I had read that prior and had hoped something had changed.
- ---
Thanks for all your input. I wish there were some answer out there.

This announcement is from:
Dave Prochnow <MrDave@p-pub.com>
What could be better than reading reviews of the best Mac-related design books and software? How about actually buying your own personal copy from the world's largest bookstore? Now, in association with Amazon.com, eVO is pleased to announce that selected books can be purchased directly from Amazon.com at a significant discount over conventional bookstore prices.
Also, in order to help you make the right book purchase, eVO now supplements each of its award- winning reviews with a new "FlipBook" movie. These QuickTime movies are roughly equivalent to standing in a bookstore and flipping through the book's pages. Then, after making your choice, just click on the special link that is associated with each book review and you're instantly transported to Amazon.com for completing your purchase decision.
For example, in our March issue we reviewed:
everything reverberates Visual Function Photoshop Magic <Creative HTML Design> Visual Cafe for Java 2.0 for Macintosh AppleShare IP 5.0.2 Myrmidon 2.0
Plus, we still provide you with all of the news from the design world.
You can read our March issue of eVO <@:>
<http://www.p-pub.com/issues/evo.htm>
And I would like to extend a special thanks to those EvangeListas who have made eVO one of the most frequently read online Mac design magazines in the world.
