This action item is from:

Mike Moser / Absolute DVD, <gnomepark@earthlink.net>

MacRacing, a Macintosh racing league using Papayrus's ICR2, has posted a
petition that will be forwarded to companies and individuals involved in
the marketing and designing of new racing simulation games and hardware.

As you probably know, Macintosh always seems to be left behind when it
comes to marketing new racing sim games. We hope with this petition, we
can raise awareness of the market and keep racing simulation alive and
growing along with the new technology, like those being made available on
the PC platform. ie: Microsoft Precision Racing, NASCAR 3 and Grand Prix
Legends scheduled for PC in July of 98, just to name a few.

You can find the petition at MacRacing's website:

<http://macracing.simplenet.com>

Webmasters will also find source code to place the identical Petition
Banner on their site. Also, if you are interested in adding your website
to the petition, you can find instructions at the petition site to do so.

MacRacing receives no financial gain from those coming to our site and if
the truth be known, we have plenty of interested "racers" running our
series, so we're not doing this for more "traffic" We just want more
"interest" shown by companies making racing sims.

Thanks for your time and support.

In the formula for Compound Miter Settings For the Table Saw

tanMG = 1 ~ [cosS x tan(360 ~ 2N)] (for all joints) should be:
tanMG = 1 / [cosS x tan(360 / 2N)] (for all joints)

Keyword: Newton

This announcement is from:

John Anderson, <anderson@everchanging.com>

Okay, so when we announced the FilePad 1.6 beta program, we decided to
throw a little sarcasm into our PR. What's funny is that people with no
interest in the product whatsoever were responding to the press release,
complimenting its intrinsically humorous value.

So there was an overwhelming fact about the final release of 1.6 that
stood out from the other collective synapses. Make the press release
funny. So basically we have to be entertainers in addition to
programmers. Interesting situation.

So while the main purpose of this press release is to announce the
availability of FilePad 1.6, an update to the first flat-file database
for the Newton, and FilePad Synchronicity, a FileMaker Pro to Newton
synchronization tool bundled with FilePad, we will also be providing a
subset of the Alternaprep Handbook for your reading pleasure.

What are Alternapreps? Well, they are typically Generation-X'ers, usually
in their early twenties at this point. The first law of the Alternaprep
is highly descriptive of the group:

1) Be a nonconformist. Exactly like all your friends.

So if you're a GenX'er with a sense of humor, go to:

<http://www.everchanging.com/allyson/AP.html>

(Thanks to Allyson Eddy for this humorous piece)

And of course, we invite you to check out everchanging's products,
including everchanging FilePad 1.6, at:

You know, I was so depressed about the death of the Newton OS that I
wasn't going to post any more releases that were Newton related. I own a

the pages of Newton based PR's.

This PR single handedly changed my mind, at least this once. :-)

Subject: PR - Troi TEXT Plug-in 1.0 BETA for FileMaker 4.0

This announcement is from:

Peter Baanen <mailto:peter@troi.nl>

Alphen a/d Rijn, The Netherlands, March 11, 1998,

Troi Automatisering announces the beta release of Troi Text Plug-in 1.0,
for FileMaker Pro 4.0 both on Macintosh and Windows.

This Cross-platform FileMaker Pro 4.0 plug-in adds the SumText function
to FileMaker Pro 4.0. With this you can create a dynamic field, that
concatenates all the text from a field in a related file. Everytime
records get added or deleted to the related file the SumText is
automatically updated. It is the text equivalent of the Sum() function
for numbers.

Peter Baanen, company president, states "After the release of Troi FM
Plug-in we were asked to find a solution to this problem. Luckily we
could do it. The SumText function is very handy for building a list of
contact persons of a company, or multikeys. Why limit yourself to the sum
of a number. Just try it out".

A fully functional version of Troi Text Plug-in 1.0b1 is available for
downloading at Troi's Web site at: <http://www.troi.com/>. On the site
there is a Macintosh (.hqx) or a windows version (.zip) of the package.
Each package contains BOTH the Macintosh version as well as the windows
version of the plug-in. Only the compression and (text)formatting is
different. This is a beta version that will expire on 30-Jun-98.

Troi TEXT Plug-in will be available as try-before-you-buy software. A
single user copy will cost $ 15 (Site license: $ 100). A special license
for Solution Developers is available at $ 80.

Normally I would reduirect this one to various sites, but it sounded like
he needed some moral support as well. I'll work on getting him on the
list, you guys give him all the ammo he needs! :)

This request is from:

Matthew Wegener, <mattweg@hotmail.com>

G'day. I've been led to you by a trust Mac friend who said you could help
me out. You see I'm a teacher at a Primary school in Adelaide, Australia.
I'm on the computer committee, and I want the school to purchase
Macintosh computers. However I'm in the minority and I have been given an
opportunity to present my case to the committe and the school council.
I've lookep up the Apple internet site for some information, however I
was wondering if you could also help me to increase my armour for the
presentation. I love Macs and don't want to work with DOS machines.

I would also be interested in joining your evangelist list, however I was
unable to enter the internet site (wouldn't let me).

Anyway, here's hoping this email finds you soon, and that you can help me

Subject: Followup - IPSEC and VPNs (Virtual Private Network)

This follow-up message is from:

Craig L. Hall, <clhall@netbox.com>

This is a follow up to my request for help re: IPSEC standards-based VPN
(Virtual Private Network) solutions for Mac which appeared in Evangelist
Digest #1104.

First of all, thank you to each of the list readers who took the time to
respond to my request. I am grateful. The helpfulness of the Mac
community is another reason to use a Mac.

Summary of what I learned:

IPSEC is a standard in the process of being developed. Many of the
proprietary VPN solutions on the market are working toward an IPSEC
standard, but the solutions are still proprietary.

A number of cross-platform IPSEC VPN solutions are available. Following
is a list of cross-platform IPSEC VPN solutions. I have not tried any of
them, but have confirmed that they each have a Macintosh client.

DataFellows
<http://www.datafellows.com/solutions/fs-crypto/telecommuting.htm>

Interlink's NetLock <http://www.interlink.com/NetLOCK/>

Internet Smartsec AB <http://www.smartsec.se>

Technologic, Inc. <http://www.tlogic.com>

EMJ America <http://www.emj.com>

SSH IPSEC Express <http://www.ssh.fi>

Competing with the IPSEC standard is the PPTP and L2TP standards being
developed by IBM, Microsoft, Cisco, and others. Network Telesystems has a
cross-platform VPN solution based on PPTP and plans to support L2TP when
it emerges.

Network Telesystems, <http://www.nts.com>

Several people suggested a product called Dave from Thursby Systems. But
Dave does not run Windows applications on a Mac and the VPN software I
need runs as an application.

Several people said that I should be able to run Virtual PC on my PB 1400
even though it is 117mghz and not the recommended 133mghz for Virtual PC.
But I have tried Virtual PC on my current configuration and it constantly
crashes. Upgrading is a possibility, but then I have to justify the
expense of upgrading when it is easier for the tech support people to
give me a Windows PC that they have on-hand. One reader doubts that
Raptor's Eagle VPN client would run under emulation.

I received many other suggestions which for one reason or another do not
seem to fit my situation. I am by no means, however, an expert or
technician. If you would like to see the fifty-two responses I received,
I would be glad to send them. Some very knowledgeable people were kind
enough to share their thoughts.

Unfortunately in my case I didn't have the information about the
cross-platform IPSEC VPN solutions in time. Our tech support people told
our company's administration that there are no cross-platform IPSEC VPN
solutions. By the time I had more accurate information a decision had
already been made to invest heavily in Raptor's Windows-only solution. If
you see a VPN on your company's horizon, spread the word early that there
are a number of cross-platform VPN solutions on the market.

Subject: PR - Mythos 0.9.1 Now Available

Keyword: Market by market, Games

This announcement is from:

Geoffrey Reiss, <midgard@mindspring.com>

I'm pleased to announce that Mythos version 0.9.1 is now available!

Things are going like gang-busters on Mythos development: Tons of new art
(got a great new sprite animator), bug fixes, added stability (especially
for 680xx machines), and a lot of other enhancements...

The documentation is behind schedule and peripherals (Avatar Evolver,
demo Campaign) lacking, but all is otherwise progressing nicely in the
Mythos multiverse...

I'll probably have the next upgrade in June '98 with a whole new Monster
schema (with a social structure!) and a new, improved GuyDead Toore demo
Campaign, new artwork, new capabilities for the Registered version and
more...

*****

Described as "Rogue on steroids," Mythos is a heavily-randomized
Macintosh fantasy role-playing system that allows the addition of
user-defined adventures into the otherwise randomly-defined Worlds.
Mythos is known as "Evoware"...though currently quite playable, the
system is constantly under development with new enhancements, bug-fixes &
art, and updated through quarterly upgrades, available only on-line. In
the Locked freeware version, only 3 of 9 worlds are used, it won't allow
the inclusion of additional adventures, and you can not be Knighted (and
engage the other factions of Mythos for ultimate power!).

Requirements: Prefers a fast Quadra/PPC,13"> 256-color monitor, 8mb RAM,
8mb HD space (12.5 for full vers).

Adventure on!
