Subject: Digital Guy Could Use Some ISP Suggestions

This request is from:

The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>

Well, sometimes I get stumped and have to go to the experts... in this
case it involves my internet connection.

A few months ago we moved into our first home located in Rurban (that's
what they're calling Rural-Urban areas these days) Boulder Creek, CA in
Santa Cruz county. Yeah, El Nino has been interesting here, but aside
from some hectic commuting we're fine.

Anyway, I've been (how to put this?) less than happy with my current ISP.
It's a 24/7 dial-up, which is all I really need (until DSL, Cable or some
other high speed access comes along) and can afford (I simply can't
justify frame relay to my wife...though she's getting so annoyed with
flaky net access and weird DNS problems it could come to that). I'm
looking for someone who has a POP local to Boulder Creek, can sell me a
24/7 dial-up connection (I don't need web space or anything like that)
with a static IP and DNS support.

Okay, to make this Mac specific: This is for the all Mac network I use to
run this list from home.

Anyway, I've already done the hunting through isps.com and other
resources, but that doesn't tell me what ISPs really work for people. If
an EvangeLista whose local to the area or (better yet!) who works for an
ISP can give me tip as to who I could work with to make this happen, I
would be very happy.

If anyone from @Home or a California xDSL provider just happens to be
hanging out on this list and can tell me when I can get a better
connection to the net, let me know -- I promise not to blab. ;-)

Subject: Followup - Disney Blast Browser Hack

Keyword: Advocacy, Guerilla Tactics

This follow-up message is from:

Jos Pedro Sousa do Amaral, <amaral@storeria.bio.ou.edu>

I managed to get into Disney Blast as a Macintosh user doing the
following:

1. Doctored up a copy of Mozilla using the recipe indicated in the
EvangeList Digest V1 #1136. Started that copy.

2. Set my Mozilla preferences to start the browser on the last page
viewed during the last section. Then I logged into Disney Blast and went
past the initial page that would kick out Mac user. Quit Mozilla.

3. Started my unchanged copy of Mozilla, and voil! it started inside
Disney Blast. Registered and traveled ad libitum with my *unchanged*
copy, hopefully recording that visit as a Mac visit ;^)

What's wrong with the Disney dudes?
__________________________
Digital Guy Sez:

Unfortunately it isn't recorded as a a mac visit. I'm guessing (because I
*still* haven't tried it myself!) that you received a "cookie" containing
information that allows the site to "recognize" you. It still thinks your
a Windows user, though. Ech.

As to what's wrong: Well, I can't say to much without giving away my
source, but think corporate sponsorship. Never underestimate the
political motivation behind supporting a specific sponsors platform of
choice, particularly if that sponsor is (insert your least favorite Intel
based OS developer here).

I find it particularly chilling to consider that Disney...one of the
biggest corporations on earth...find that kind of kiss-up necessary, if
my sources are correct. Of course, I should stress that this all could be
rumor and conjecture, offered here merely for quiet speculation by the
EvangeListas.

Hey, even Digital Guy doesn't need legals breathing down his neck...even
if they do look cute in those $800 suits and matching mouse ears. ;-)

Subject: Tidbit - Evangelist Makes the Difference for Mac4Sale

This tidbit from:

Carl Powell <carl@mac4sale.com>

Recently, I started Mac4sale.com, a new site for free listings of
Macintosh and related items. I didn't know how much need there was for
such a site, but had a lot of stuff to sell myself and thought I'd give
it a whirl. In order to get it kicked off, I posted a message to the
evangelist and it was accepted and delivered. The response is always
overwhelming! In just a few days, the system went from a skeleton of a
database to a full-fledged web site!

After the second posting a month later, we had over 1700 visits in one
day! The site has only been up since Feb 1st, and we already have had
over $350,000 in items posted by hundreds of individuals and companies.
We contine to offer this as a free service and are still looking for more
sponsors.

The evangelists are a top-notch group of people and I wanted to thank Guy
and the staff for their support of new ideas like Mac4sale.com. It really
makes a difference to us and our success to have such a great place to
promote our efforts!

Mac4sale.com is running on a 9150/120 using Filemaker Pro 4.0 as the
server. It has had over 14,000 searches made since Feb 11th, and over
11,000 visitors to the site since Feb 1st. So far, there has been about
$350,000 in merchandise listed at the low resale prices. To visit the
site, set your browser to: <http://www.mac4sale.com>

Thanks again!

Carl Powell

Okay, before I get a lot of notes about tooting my own horn by posting
this, let me acknowledge all those people I simply can't post. If all the
items that didn't get posted, well, sucked, it wouldn't be such a hard
job. But a lot of them are good. Overwhelmingly so. The problem is
there's so MANY of them. I can't even reply to all of them personally
(though I try...I really do).

I want to take this moment to thank y'all for sticking with us. I know
some of you get peeved when I don't post your notes, but fortunately most
of you are understanding. Have I mentioned lately how great you guys are?

Subject: PR - GoMac 1.5 Released

This announcement is from:

Proteron L.L.C., <sales@proteron.com>

Proteron, L.L.C. today announced the release of GoMac 1.5. Targeted at
users who perform multiple tasks on the Mac as well as those migrating
from the Windows environment, GoMac is Proteron's popular system utility
which implements a program bar, start menu and keyboard switcher for the
Mac OS.

The program is available for immediate download at www.proteron.com.
Subscribers to MacAddict, MacConnect and Metrowerks Code Warrior will
also be receiving GoMac in future distributions.

New features abound in GoMac 1.5. Following closely on the heels of
Microsoft's release of Office 98 for the Mac, GoMac offers Office 98
Integration. Users with Office 98 installed will see a Microsoft Office
98 item in their Start Menu for easy access to Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

GoMac 1.5 also supports Apple's Control Strip technology and has a
completely redesigned look to reflect the platinum appearance Apple
introduced with Mac OS 8.

Additional numerous minor improvements grace GoMac 1.5, including: more
options for configuring Auto hide; program specific layer control;
Click-Switch and Active Layer Toggle (ALT(tm)) in the Keyboard Switcher;
and full support for icons in the Start Menu.

GoMac 1.5 works on any Macintosh running Apple's System 7.5 through Mac
OS 8.1. An English version is currently available and localized versions
are forthcoming.

The update is free of charge for all registered GoMac users. Other users
are encouraged to register now. A single-user license for GoMac is $19.95
USD; up to 3 additional copies for the same user are discounted to $5.00
USD each. Site licenses of more than 10 are priced at $14.95 USD per
copy. Bulk pricing is available by contacting Proteron. Discounts are
available for educational institutions.

Subject: Tidbit - Historical Apple Exchange

This tidbit is from:

Andrew Starr, <atstarr@negia.net>

<http://www.negia.net/~atstarr/historicapples/>

Historical Apple Exchange lets people list wants, for-sales,
for-donations, and wanted-donation (501c3s only), for Apple I, Apple ][+,
Apple ///, Lisa, and eMate. ($200 finder's fee for Apple I, see page for
details).

This summer I hope to make the site more automated and perhaps add other
categories.

This does not mean Apple isn't doing well, just as the fact that some
people collect Model Ts does not reflect on Ford, or pre-1972
Beetle-ownership does not reflect on VW.
