Hi, I remember a few weeks ago, you guys were talking about Sarah's enhanced cd's. Well I went to the store today and found an import called "Rarities, B-Sides, and other Stuff".
As usual, i was expecting an enhanced Cd. When I played it on my PC, it showed nothing. Now that I am at my Mac and wanted to play the Cd, the enhanced Cd worked almost by itself. It has the video for "I Will remember You" and other stuff in it. The CD costs $25 (ouch), its an import and its really amazing, and it seems , that only works on Macs =)

The Bare Feats site which specializes in "down and dirty" speed testing of various Macintosh systems and functions has joined the Mac Times Network as of April 1st. The main summary page of all recent test results can be reached at this URL: <http://www.mactimes.com/barefeats/>
As creator and main test pilot, I will continue my quest to provide Mac users with the bare facts on speed through various feats of daring but now with the added support of MTN and it's sponsors.

This request is from:

I would like to export data from my Apple CD Audio Player database into a Filemaker database. I have looked at the file and can't figure out how it is organized, so I was wondering if anyone has written a program to extract data into some sort of text file or database file that I could use.
I don't want to do this any other way as I'm talking about 300+ CDs. I would also like to do this before the database file becomes too full and I start losing the information already there (I don't know how much it will hold, but I've heard it maxes out around 500 or so).
Once the information is in a recognizable format I can do the rest. I just need it extracted from the current file. If anyone has a program that will do this I would be very appreciative. If any programmer has an itch to tackle this one, I might be pursuaded to pay for the service. Let me know and we can go from there.
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this issue! I will post a summary once I have the definitive answer (or once I know no such answer exists).
I saw your not and could not help relating what I think is one of the best lines ever in a movie. (Ok, it may not be the best line, but it is certainly great dialogue and I lie in wait for someone to set me up for this line)
Peter Lorre says to Humphrey Bogart:
PL: You despise me don't you? HB: If I gave you any thought at all, I probably would.
with a fictional conversation between to fictional characters:
Bill: You despise Windows, don't you? Steve: If I even considered using it, I probably would.
or
Bill: You despise Windows, don't you? Steve: If I could ever get it to run, I probably would.
Ok, it's a stretch, but they don't call me 'justification boy' for nothing. ;-) __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Hey, it got you printed, didn't it? I have a feeling that it's going to be used in a thousand sigs by the end of the week.
Okay, the fact this is one of my favorite all time zingers had something to do with it. ;-)
As many of you certainly did last Monday, I downloaded the release version of QuickTime 3.0, both for Mac and Windows (and bought the Pro version very soon after). The windows version was for my coworkers, which are "lucky" to work on Wintel machines ;-)
One of them have two twin girls, 2 years old, La and Jade and they love penguins since they were born, mainly because of a cartoon named "Pengou the Penguin" or some title like that.
So, after installing QT3, my friend launched the MoviePlayer app, opened the demos files and ... envoyed the lovely QuickTime mascot. He them printed two copies of it on a quality color inkjet printer to bring back at home for his lovely twins.
Not only they envoyed the images a lot, but they now call any penguin "KickTam" and they will bring them at the nursery school for ... evangelism !
If someone have other "KickTam" pictures, feel free to send a copy to me, I'll forwarded them to La & Jade. __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:

Mac Requests has been making some major advancements in the past few weeks. Now, we are happy to announce the opening of 4 new petitions, bringing our total number of petitions to 6. Here are the titles we're petitioning for: Final Fantasy VII, Jedi Knight, Ultima Online, Uprising, NaturallySpeaking, QuickBooks. We hope to reach at least 1000 signatures for each title, hopefully even more for FFVII and Jedi Knight.
Head on down to Mac Requests: <http://mac.prohosting.com>. Or, to go directly to the petitions page: <http://mac.prohosting.com/petition.html>
While you're there, stop by our Discussion Boards or browse through our archives.
If you are unfamiliar with our site, here's some basic info: our number one goal is to increase the number of software titles and hardware available for the Mac OS. Our site is updated multiple times each week, so the content never gets old. Visitors to our site are greeted by a familiar, easy-to-navigate appearance, allowing everyone to quickly find company contact information, where they can write to the company expressing their interest. The more people who write to developers expressing their interest in a product, the greater chance the company will realize the obvious: that the Mac really is a good platform to develop for.
We hope all the Evangelistas out there will bookmark our site and find it to be an invaluable resource for Macintosh product requests. If everyone participates, who knows... we just might succeed!
As a favor to my Tae Kwon Do school, I am putting several amateur QuickTime movies of "martial arts stuff" on my website at: <http://www.qedtechnologies.com/CTKD/>
They usually work great except that Windows users with older QT plug-ins get bizarre behavior when two or more movies are on-screen at the same time. I encourage everyone to upgrade to QT 3.0 but some users don't know how to check their version numbers and aren't inclined to since things always work OK at the start.
Ideally, I would like a movie that shows whether it is running under QT 3.0 or an earlier version. Under QT 2.x, it might show the words "Time to upgrade to QT 3.0" but under QT 3.0, it could have "Kicking Butt with QT 3.0". Is this possible? If not, maybe some kind of very obvious, easily described visual effect would work well enough...
A less ambitious idea would be to have a movie that requires QT 3.0 along with words saying "If this movie doesn't work, you need QT 3.0". :-(
Other suggestions that solve my problem are also welcome, of course.
Please bear in mind that I can only use solutions that are cross-platform and browser-independant. Also some people will be surfing by modem so any solutions should be kept as lightweight as possible.
I will summarize your responses and post them back to this list. The best response will also be used to enhance the web site mentioned above...
Thanks in advance, Rick Roy <rick@qedtechnologies.com>
I just received my listing of the latest Inc magazine's online issue. Nice one on the Y2K problem...that Mac's don't have. Enjoy.

TechWeb has a special column called "Tales from the Mac Side". It covers Mac news and views, with continuous coverage of Macintosh corporate and product information. "Tales" could be a good source of info for Evangelistas.
Today there's a column warning that software developers are moving away from creating Mac-native games. The advent of G3 chips allows Mac users to run PC games in emulation (using Virtual PC), the author states, which is a big plus to Mac users. Unfortunately, each time a Mac user buys one of these games, it provides one less reason to create a Mac version of them. Over time, this erodes the number of Mac-native games.
The entire article is located at <http://www.techweb.com/wire/apple>
I don't know if this is a hidden feature or not, but I have not seen it documented anywhere (although I confess I haven't really looked either). ANYWAY, here it is:
If you go the the File Sharing control panel and option-double-click on any user connected to your machine, you can send them a message (a feature I thought was reserved for the AppleShare files server software).
Keen, huh? __________________________ Digital Guy Sez:
Wow, something I didn't know!
I just tried this on my home network (sometimes it's a good thing to have two networked machines side by side :). Sure enough, it works great. I ran through the online guide, and found no mention of this feature. I'm sure it's documented SOMEWHERE...but it's such a cool feature I'm posting this anyway. :)
I recently upgraded my second monitor so that both are now the same size (17"). Since the MacOS 8 Desktop Pictures Control Panel allows you to display a different picture on each of your monitors it occurred to me that this would be a great format for panoramic views. So I started taking digital pictures with this in mind: shoot, shift the camera to the left or right, shoot again. Some of the results can be downloaded at <http://idt.net/~restemey/Panorama/BPan.html> with more to come. Put New York City's Central Park and midtown skyscrapers on your desktop!

An independent study rated the Mac Web Network as the best value for click thrus over other banner exchanges. The study, performed by Mactimes affiliate Dan Knight, reports that the Mac Web Network has a "61% higher click rate" as compared to the second place banner network.
Included in the study was the Internet Link Exchange, the largest and oldest banner exchange on the Internet. The study reveals the "Mac Web Network averages 2.8 times as many clicks as Link Exchange for Mac-related sites".
The study concluded that "Mac Web Network is the winner when it comes to click-through ratio (even calculating in the 2:1 display ratio)". Banner networks that offered higher exchange ratios (such as 1:1) did not perform as well as the Mac Web Network.
