Nice article in this week's MacWeek (04.06.98 Vol 12 No 13) about how the Showtime Networks Inc. uses Macs to run their 24-hour premium cable channel. Macs are used in every phase of production and control.

Monitor Aircraft, Marine, Law Enforcement, Emergency, AM/FM, Satellite, SSB, Ham, 900 MHz, and with optional digital signal processing-- weather fax, packet, ACARS, DTMF and CTCSS.
Global is pleased to announce a new product called the IC-PCR1000. It's a powerful wide band frequency receiver which is external and hooks up to your serial port. About the size of a ZIP drive, the unit includes an antenna and can be used with desktop and portable computers.
You can listen to receiver activity while working in foreground applications. Monitor 500 kHz to 1300 MHz (cellular is blocked) on all modes (AM/FM/WFM/SSB/CW). Has unlimited memory channels, real time band scope, tone squelch, (CTCSS) decode, 5 DTMF memories for advanced computer control, a 9600 baud data connection point for (optional) weather fax, ACARS, DSP, and other digital applications.
A recent review from "Monitoring Times" rated the unit excellent. In tests the unit was actually able to go below the specified minimum frequency and able to monitor US Navy/marine nav signals around 0.1 Mhz and digital data signals at 0.078 Mhz. Some bands require additional antenna arrangements, but the included telescoping rod antenna is great for starters.
There has been a furry of interest with this unit since it can be used for remote radio control of your computer, in addition to being able to put it on the internet for real-time frequency monitoring !
The package we are able to offer at the present time includes the IC-PCR1000 receiver, serial connector, rod antenna and AC adapter with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 software.
We will write MAC OS software for this unit if there is enough interest-- selling for $99.95 We also are developing a CD-ROM with ALL the frequencies provided from the FCC which will be able to network with the PCR-1000. With the new development kit announced from FileMaker Pro, we will also be able to network the PCR-1000 with FileMaker databases.
The price on the package above is $599.95 We will offer MacEvangelists FREE shipping and handling on the package and all major credit cards are accepted.
Providing there is enough interest, we will write the MAC OS software and have it available in about 60 days from this posting.

Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1998 04:10:38 -0000 From: EvangeList <evangelist@apple.com> Subject: ?? - Looking for FileMaker Pro Solution
This request is from:
Greg Burkett, <burkett_greg@mindspring.com>
I'm looking for New Perspective Software, Inc., Flagstaff, Arizona, who developed MembershipMaster, a FileMaker Pro 3.0 database for non-profit organizations. I bought it and love it and now need to buy 15 additional cpu license's, but they seem to have disappeared.
I have almost completed customizing their solution for our center that serves people with disabilities. I am a non-paid volunteer and as a non-profit we do not have big budgets to work with.
If I cannot find the original developer, who holds the "key" to unlocking the database for multi-user access, I will be forced to find another solution to yet again, customize for our specific operations.
Any tips on the fate of New Perspective & contacting them, or leads on other FileMaker solutions would be very appreaciated.

I've got a wonderful new G3 with VirtualPC that I'd like to use to run FreeBSD, a free 4.4BSD-based version of unix (check out <http://www.freebsd.com> for more details, if you're interested). Unfortunately, I've run into problems which I'm hoping some evangelista might be able to help with (Connectix's support staff have not replied to my question, and a search of DejaNews didn't help any either).
Without going into a lot of technical details, the crux of the matter is that the FreeBSD installer doesn't recognize VirtualPC's primary IDE drive/controller, which makes it pretty tough to install the OS. :-) Oddly enough, the installer *does* recognize the secondary IDE controller (i.e. the CD ROM).
For those who are tempted to blurt out that it's hopeless, I should also point out that VirtualPC does support DOS/Windows 3.x/Windows 95/Windows NT, OS/2, OpenStep, *and* RedHat Linux (x86-based, of course).
I should also point out that I know about LinuxPPC, mkLinux, and Tenon's MachTen, but what I really do want to do is run FreeBSD under VirtualPC on my Mac desktop (at least until there's another OS I can run that lets me run Mac and unix-based software on my G3, nudge-nudge, wink-wink).
So, if there's anyone out there that has managed to get FreeBSD working under VirtualPC, I'd love to hear about it. Anybody? Anyone? Bueller?

This follow-up message is from:
The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>
This is just a quick note to let you all know that I have felt that power that is the EvangeList and have received so many incredible suggestions, tips, information and other handy items from EvangeListas regarding my search for a new ISP that I'm simply overwhelmed. For one thing, I expected the "I feel your pain" notes (and yes, I do appreciate them...sometimes you feel like the only person this happens to, an isolation that's increased every moment you're trying to connect to a remote server, fruitlessly) and a batch of ISP names and URL's. I didn't quite expect quite as many inside tips on upcoming ISP's and offers for personal help as I got.
As such I may take awhile to respond to all of the notes, especially since I'm going to be spending most of Tuesday at a web conference in San Francisco. But a heartfelt thanks goes out to all those who sent stuff in! :-)
