This tidbit is from:
The Digital Guy <mailto:evangelist@apple.com>
Dan Costa of the Computer Shopper over on ZDNet has clued into something - -- That Apple may have the key to the future of computer sales, and that being a "niche" player isn't as bad a thing as some would make it out to be:
Direct PC Vendors Could Learn from Apple's Strategy
"It may seem odd--OK, crazy--for a columnist these days to hold up Apple Computer as a role model, but the company makes an interesting case study for those of us that follow the direct computer industry.Over the past year, Apple has embraced many aspects of the direct model and substantially increased the effectiveness of its operations. If Apple survives, it will be largely because of this new efficiency. To thrive, however, Apple must succeed in servicing its niche markets. And that's a lesson from which PC vendors could learn."

MacSpeedZone (macspeedzone.com) is pleased to announce a thingamajig we call the "Comparison Generator". With this ingenious piece of html you can compare "on the fly" performance stats for most current and previous PowerMacs. The database contains Apple Macs from the Quadra 630 on up to the G3/300. Also included are most UMAX, PowerComputing and Motorola machines. Two clicks can tell you how much slower your aging machine is compared to that new G3 you've been drooling over or help you back up all that bragging you have been doing about your machine - all on one convenient page. To check it out visit the front page of the site and click on the "Comparison Generator" link.
Also....
Ever wonder what is the best setting for Disk Cache? Set too slow and you pay the penalty in performance. Set to high and you waste valuable RAM. We take a look at this issue and believe that our results may take some of the mystery out of the decision for you.
Finally....
MacSpeedZone is looking for quest columnists. Do you have some expertise, insight, perspective or sense of humor about the Macintosh "Environment", Computing in general or the Internet that you would like to share with the Mac community? Write a guest column for us and we will provide the audience. This could be an excellent way for you to get exposure for yourself, your web site or business. If you are interested please contact us and let us know what you would like to write about.

Happy Computing,

Berkeley Systems <http://www.berkelysystems.com/> has a couple of great games available for the Mac, You Don't Know Jack the Netshow, and YDKJ Sports the Netshow. Both are available for Mac and Win95 and are versions of the retail game that can be played for FREE over the internet.
YDKJ is a twisted trivia game in sort of a game show format that is highly addictive.
Recently, a new game, Acrophobia was introduced to the lineup. Acrophobia is a word game which is also played over the internet. There's only one problem... there is no Mac version yet. Here's a quote from the site:
"Why is the Mac version taking so long? We are timing the completion of the Mac version around the release of the next update of Acro (which will have more cool new features). That way, the Mac version will have the same exact features as the updated Windows version.
"Here's the 411: Since we do not currently have a significant quantity of Mac players for JACK the netshow (the majority are Windows 95), allocating our resources to developing a Mac version of Acrophobia has been a bit more difficult. And please remember, we started as a Mac company way back when, so we understand your concerns.
"When, exactly, is "Spring '98"?! We are planning on a June release date for the Macintosh version of Acrophobia. However, since the actual date has not yet been announced, stay tuned for details. (Note: Before you go get all huffy, please keep in mind that "Spring '98" officially lasts until June 20th!)
"What can Mac players do to help? If you are a Mac Bezerker, then PLAY JACK the netshow regularly! If our Mac player numbers increase, then it's much easier to convince the suits-n-ties that we need to develop future Bezerk games for the Mac market segment. So, GO PLAY JACK the netshow and JACK Sports the netshow!"
So the long and short of it is: give the games a try! If not, who knows what cool games we may miss out on completely! I promise that once you play, you'll be addicted for life!
Men & Mice's cutting edge DNS server for the Mac OS, QuickDNS Pro, now provides more capabilities and ease of use with the latest release, version 2.1, as well as enhancing server performance. The upgrade includes user configurable log levels, domain setup assistance for classless reverse domains, and direct importing of DNS text files to the QuickDNS admin program.
User configurable log levels in QuickDNS Pro 2.1 enables administrators to control the degree of server logging. By reducing the log level, users can increase performance on busy servers and minimize the log file size. The new version also provides domain setup assistance for classless reverse domains, easing administration of reverse domains for blocks of IP addresses. An added benefit in this upgrade is direct importing of DNS text files, resulting in shorter administration time and more accuracy to domain data when migrating from other DNS servers. Several other enhancements have also been made to add more reliability to the already robust QuickDNS application.
The upgrade to QuickDNS Pro 2.1 is free for registered users of QuickDNS Pro 2.0. QuickDNS Pro 1.x users can now upgrade to the 2.1 version for only $89. The full version of QuickDNS Pro 2.1 is available now for $290 from Men & Mice, StarNine Technologies and resellers worldwide. Educational licences are also available from Men & Mice for $195.
A fully functional demo, upgrade and new copy of QuickDNS Pro 2.1 is available at:

Yahoo is running a vote on favorite OS. Mac OS has a lead at 57%, why don't you drop by and add your vote? If you aren't interested in voting, you might be interested to know that UNIX is second and Windows isn't even close (the last time I checked).

In this day and age of "serving you since February!" I thought I'd mention quickly that as of April 16th, TidBITS has been published weekly for eight years on the Internet. So far we've heard of only one other regularly published, edited publication that has been published solely online for longer (The Irish Emigrant, which started in 1987 <http://www.iol.ie/emigrant/>.
During these 8 years and 425 issues of reporting on topics of interest to the Macintosh Internet community, TidBITS has amassed over 68,000 readers in some 120 countries.
If, for some reason, you haven't seen TidBITS yet, check out our Web site (which also carries translations of TidBITS in Dutch, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish) at <http://www.tidbits.com/> or subscribe to our mailing list if you wish to receive issues in email each week.
