Subject: ?? - DAT Recording Software

This request is from:

Jay Goldman, <jay@circledream.com>

Hi there! I'm looking for a Mac-based solution for a friend of mine. He
has a band that recorded a few songs onto DAT tape and he would like to
transfer this on to CD. I offered the use of my Mac with a brand new
Yamaha CDR-400 but I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to get at
the audio info recorded on the DAT. I have an older DYNATEK DAT SCSI
drive hooked up to the machine.

If anyone could recommend a software solution to me directly
<jay@circledream.com>, I would greatly appreciate it. I will happily post
a summary of replies to the list.

Subject: Followup - Happy Endings - Looking For A Great Mac Thesaurus

This follow-up message is from:

Radcliffe A. Joe, <wordstar@erols.com>

I am dumbfounded at the far-flung popularity of your newsletter. I am
sure you already know this, but your devout band of Evangelistas is
literally spread around the globe.

Within 48 hours of revealing my quest for a Mac-based thesaurus via the
Evangelist Digest, I was deluged with responses, some from as far away as
London, Europe and Australia. Many were pursuing the same quest as I and
urged me to alert them if I did find what I was looking for.

Others broached numerous welcome suggestions. Among the most frequently
recommended was SpellCatcher - formerly Thunder 7 - from Casady & Greene.
Curiously I have SpellCatcher loaded on my Mac, but never really thought
of it as a thesaurus per se, only as a secondary spell checker,
supplementing my mostly inadequate word processor-based dictionaries.

After hearing from SpellCatcher devotees, I went back and took a second
look at this database. It is indeed pretty good, however, two outstanding
suggestions came from Evangelistas Craig Issacs of Dantz Development -
those great folks who make Retrospect and other invaluable backup
programs - and Deborah Kac, whom I believe is with the University of
Southern California.

Ms. Kac steered me to the Dept. of Humanities of Chicago University which
offers what is undoubtedly the best electronic thesaurus I've ever seen.
Theirs is part of what is called the ARTFL Project, a joint venture with
the Ottowa-based National Institute of the French Language.

Their thesaurus, which is part of a much larger scholarly reference
collection, blew me away. It is Roget-based and is undoubtedly one of the
most comprehensive I have found in an electronic based thesaurus. The
only real disadvantage to using this outstanding reference tool - is that
to get to it one must contend with the vagaries of the Web - like being
able to log on to the database when you really need it.

On the other hand Merriam Webster's thesaurus, to which I was directed by
Craig Issacs, is available both as a web-based reference tool, and on CD
Rom, available from Amazon.Com for a mere $24.95. This too is an
outstanding reference tool, and I will be forever grateful to the many
caring and supportive Evangelistas who wasted no time in helping to make
my search so very easy.

The University of Chicago's reference library is at
<http://humanities.uchicago.edu/forms_unrest/ROGET.html>, and readers can
log on to the Merriam Webster homepage at
<http://www.m-w.com/thesaurus.htm>

Much Thanks.

From: Guy Kawasaki <Kawasaki@garage.com>
Subject: PR - MaBaSoft releases World Clock CSM v2.0

This announcement is from:

Marco Damaschi, <marco.damaschi@galactica.it>

What is MaBaSoft World Clock CSM?

You are a real globetrotter and spend one day in New York, one in Tokyo
and one in Sydney? You live in a huge country? You have frequent contacts
with people from other continents or foreign companies? MaBaSoft World
Clock CSM will then make your life easier.

World Clock CSM is a control strip module implementing a multi-time
clock. It gives you the possibility of simultaneously displaying up to 5
different times and of saving up to 23 frequently used cities in World
Clock menu. World Clock CSM provides different time formats and display
options.

World Clock CSM is 5 US$ shareware. It available from the MaBaSoft ftp
site at:

<ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/World_Clock_CSM_2.0.sit>

and from all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites.

System Requirements

MaBaSoft World Clock CSM runs on all types of Mac and needs System 7.1.1
or higher. Date & Time control panel and Control Strip, Extensions Strip
or Desktop Strip need to be installed. Minimum Extensions Strip version
supporting World Clock CSM is v1.5.2.

- --------------------------------------------

What's new in MaBaSoft World Clock CSM v2.0?

World Clock CSM is now a *true* multi-time clock: it simultaneously
displays up to 5 different times. Clocks can be added through the "Add
Clock" command and removed through the "Remove Clock" command.

World Clock CSM is Extensions Strip savvy. Minimum Extensions Strip
version supporting World Clock CSM is v1.5.2. The module is Xed off in
the strip if loaded with Extensions Strip v1.5.1 or lower.

System requirements are now less stringent: World Clock CSM can be used
without Finder Scripting Extension. If the installed System is not
scriptable, the "Open Date & Time" command of World Clock menu is
disabled.

World Clock dialog boxes have been re-designed to match the Appearance
Manager guidelines.

In case of lacking local city's name (the location was defined in the Map
control panel and it is not included in the Date & Time cities list), the
local city's name becomes "n/a" and the "Show City" option is not
disabled.

The routine which checks the OSL compliance of the Finder has been
rewritten. The OSL compliance was not correctly recognized on PowerMacs
running MacOS 8.1.
