This follow-up message is from:
Andrew Taylor, <aetaylor@tiac.net>
Unfortunately the posting for MacSpeech.com started with my personal email address.
People are sending email to me instead of visiting the site. I am responding to that email as well as email to the site and to people who ask questions in their surveys. That is a lot of email. Then I write code.
We really need you to go to the site <http://www.macspeech.com> and fill out a survey so your information and desires get recorded in the database.
If you have more to say, by all means send email to <macspeech@macspeech.com>.
Thanks for your support and understanding!

Keyword: Advocacy, Why Macs Are Better
This tidbit is from:
Chuck Norris, <chuck@intervu.net>
A co-worker in my office just received a new 400 MHz Pentium II machine. It's all decked out: 100+ MB RAM, 100 MHz bus speed, etc. One of the fastest Windows machines (reasonable) money can buy.
He's a modest guy - not one to crow - but the "I've got the fastest machine in the building" *glow* was just radiating from him.
To put some hard numbers behind the speedy reputation, we ran the ByteMark benchmark (Byte Magazine's standard benchmark suite - see <http://www.byte.com> for details). Even I was not prepared for the results. I knew that, cycle-for-cycle, PowerPC is speedier than Pentium, but I wasn't prepared to see that my 266 MHz G3 was significantly *faster* than the 400 MHz Pentium on most of the test suites.
Here are the specifics (scores are relative to a 90 MHz Pentium):
I work in a Windoze-centric office, and hard numbers like these make it much easier to fend off those who might encourage (or require! yikes!) a switch to Wintel. I'm hoping for the day when I can *emulate* Windoze faster than the speediest Pentium!

This request is from:
David Russell, <David_R@mindspring.com>
We're doing some work for a client who has specified ISO-8859-1 character encoding for some foreign words.
So far I've had no luck getting through to Apple to get the Text Encoding Conversion Manager.
Now, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a ISO-8859-1 compliant font for the Mac, which would be the easiest solution.
The irony of all this is that, as far as I can tell, ISO-8859-1 is not part of the SGML or HTML standard and is primarily used, you guessed it, on Windows boxes.

Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 02:06:21 -0000 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - Need Appleshare IP 5 Info To Avoid NT 4
This request is from:
Joe Dobrowolski, <Joe@AMandA.com>
I have combed the internet, the web, apple's site, and all of the usual suspects, but I have been unable to find any information about Appleshare IP 5.0. Ok, I have found marketing informatio,n but I am looking for some pursuasive comments by real world users that would help me. My firm has an old P90 file server with NT 3.5 on it. It is time to upgrade the hardware and the software. Until now, an Apple server was out of the question. With G3 server prices so low, price is not an issue anymore. Now I just need to get past the issue of stability and speed. That is where the Evangelistas come into play.
I need to present my boss and our only NT user (who profusely spouts the words, robust, industrial-strength and crash-proof to my boss, to the point that my boss has nearly been brainwashed against Apple) with resounding evidence that an Appleshare server will be very stable and will also be fast enough (on a 233/G3) for a 14 user design firm. I am calling on the Evangelistas to send me some postitive stories about the use of AppleShare servers in their office, specifically related to stability and speed.
Thanks so much, - -Joe Dobrowolski Systems Administrator

This tidbit is from:
Dave Ottalini, <dave.ottalini@tcs.wap.org>
Washington Apple Pi will help kick-off Apple Computer's new Summer User Group Road Show tour this coming Saturday, May 23, 1998 during its general meeting at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
Rumors hint everyone should come away "positively rhapsodic" over the screaming new PowerBook G3 and the most dramatically new Macintosh since the original: the IMac.
The Tour will include a discussion of Apple's new Mac OS and Hardware Roadmap called "Pro. Go. Whoa!: A strategy as simple as the Mac."
Washington Apple Pi President, Lorin Evans says the IMac could be a major turning point for Apple: "They are jumping back into the consumer market in a big way. The IMac will turn a lot of heads - and give people a reason to fall in love with the Mac once more."
As with most WAP General Meetings, there will be lots of door prizes - including T-Shirts and other surprises from Apple and other Mac vendors. "Even if you're not a Mac user, this is one meeting anyone interested in computers should come to," says Evans.
The program starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday May 23rd at the:
Northern Virginia Community College. Community Cultural Center 8333 Little River Turnpike Annandale, VA 22003
Parking is FREE. For more information and a map to the meeting:

Date: Wed, 13 May 1998 02:06:27 -0000 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: $$ - Toast the Wintel Taskbar - Proteron Boosts Forward Migration
Dear MacEvangelists:
Steve Jobs and Apple have clearly shown the world that the Mac processor, the G3, toasts the Pentium II. Now Proteron is out to show the world that the Mac taskbar, GoMac, toasts the Wintel taskbar.
Apple has given the Macintosh a hardware / price ratio to compete with any and all of the Wintel players. Naysayers, desperate for another excuse, might now raise objections about software availability. Enter GoMac.
Here at Proteron we are aware that the key to converting Wintel users to our beloved platform is more than just a hardware issue. Software must be in place to welcome them as they step up to a real operating system. We whole-heartedly encourage Apple's efforts toward the consumer market and are convinced that forward migration is the key to the continued success of the platform for the rest of us. We want to help.
GoMac is now one of the most important arrows in the MacEvangelist's quiver. It increases the functionality of the Mac OS and is a comforting welcome to PC users. No more naysayers. No more excuses. It's true that the task-bar is a great idea. But great ideas are more at home on the Macintosh than on any other OS. That's why we made GoMac. That's why we want you to use it. It's time to prove that anything PC can do, Mac can do better.
For a limited time Proteron is offering GoMac at a discounted price to encourage forward migration. You won't see this offer anywhere else - it's only for Evangelists and their converts. So spread the word! Download a copy of GoMac today and show a poor hapless Wintel user what a taskbar should be and what a real operating system is.
A trial version of GoMac can be downloaded

This announcement is from:
Apple PR
Continuing its very successful efforts in competitive product advertising, Apple Computer, Inc. last night launched a 30-second television commercial, "Steamroller." "Steamroller" highlights the speed of the recently launched PowerBook G3 series of notebook computers which are up to twice as fast as Pentium notebook computers.*
"We have proven again and again that our G3 computers are speed demons compared to Intel-based computers," said Steve Jobs, Apple's Interim CEO. "As the commercial demonstrates, our new PowerBook G3s are flattening the competition."
Apple's "Steamroller" airs again tonight during ABC's Spin City, Dharma and Greg, The Drew Carey Show, and NBC's 3rd Rock and is expected to run for several weeks. A QuickTime version of the commercial will be available on Apple's website (www.apple.com).
The TV spot is complementary to Apple's 8-page PowerBook G3 magazine insert breaking in national consumer, technology and business publications beginning this week.
Apple Computer, Inc. ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II, and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Apple is now recommitted to its original mission to bring the best personal computing products and support to students, educators, designers, scientists, engineers, businesspersons and consumers in over 140 countries around the world.

This request is from:
Grant Bayley, <gbayley@ausmac.net>
I had someone contact me the other day at the Mac User Group asking whether I knew of any typing test software. By typing test software I mean that which just tests typing speed an accuracy - not that which gives tutoring to a user and then tests them. Apparently there are a few products out there on the Windows side of things, but I haven't been able to find any on the Mac side.
Does anybody know of anything products like this?
The people are wanting to run it on a IIsi, but will consider upgrading if they have a product that does what they want.
Thanks in advance for any help on this one,
