This week at -Focus on Mac Software- I summarise the key issues addressed
with the introduction of Mac OS X, including links to top Mac OS X
articles. I also ask a few questions no one else as asked before: is
there something missing in this strategy? Who loses out?

Subject: PR - Peabody Digital SoundWorks Announces PDS SoundView

Keyword: Market by market, Multimedia

This announcement is from:

Forrest Tobey, <forrest@peabody.jhu.edu>

Peabody Digital SoundWorks announces PDS SoundView, software that lets
you see digital audio in a whole new light. PDS SoundView is a powerful
multi-function digital audio tool that has enough high-end features for
pro-audio users yet is easy enough to be used by home hobbyists. PDS
SoundViews functionality is based around its powerful sound analysis
engine which offers spectrum analysis, formant analysis, and pitch
recognition (also known as fundamental frequency analysis) of your
digitally recorded sounds. Once PDS SoundView has analyzed your sounds,
it offers an extensive palette of processing techniques that can blend,
morph, stretch, and otherwise twist your audio, opening up a totally new
range of sonic possibilities previously unavailable in a single digital
audio program.

Using PDS SoundViews analysis capabilities, you can peer into the inner
workings of a sound. Since PDS SoundView displays a sounds full
spectrogram on screen, you can see the frequency components of the entire
sound over time rather than the spectrum of a single slice of time. You
can then easily use this information to achieve the perfect mix, identify
any unwanted frequency components, find out the pitches of a melody, or
simply understand what makes a sound, well, SOUND the way it does.

Because SoundViews analysis gets to the heart of a sound, you can alter
sounds in ways much more in-depth than any standard sample editor.
SoundView has the ability to manipulate a sounds formants, the very
frequency components that make up that sound. You can interpolate between
the formants of two different sounds to create dazzling morphing effects,
or apply the formants of one sound onto another, creating unusual hybrid
timbres such as the classic "robotic voice" effects you could get from
the old phase vocoders. SoundView even has its own built-in 1024-band
phase vocoder that can do pitch-shifting or time-stretching independently
of each other, a boon for music producers and post production engineers.

And the really great thing about SoundView is that you can buy it for a
very affordable price! You might find some of SoundViews functions
separately in other software or hardware products, each of which could
cost from several hundred or even several thousand dollars a pop. But
with SoundView, you can get all of these features - spectrum analysis,
sound processing, and phase vocoder - for the special introductory price
of $149 when downloading from our website.

SoundView will also be offered via mail order for the low introductory
price of $174 which includes the software on 3.5" floppies and a printed
version of the manual. Shipping and handling charges will be extra. If
you're interested in sound analysis or mutating sounds in unusual ways,
be sure to download a demo at our website at:

<http://www.peabody-digital.com/>

Look beyond the scope of traditional sample editors and give SoundView a
try. Once you have, you'll swear that you've never seen audio like this
before!

Subject: PR - Apple Computer Europe and NDS MacCoach deal

This announcement is from:

Jan Willem Luiten <mailto:janwillem.luiten@neuronsys.com>.

Neuron Data Systems recently introduced MacCoach, an ADB based device
that restarts a Macintosh after a stall or crash.

We are proud to present the co-marketing activity between Neuron Data
Systems and Apple Computer Europe. In the context of Apple Computer
Europe's Server Trade In program, every European customer purchasing a
Mac Server G3 machine is offered a free MacCoach Automatic Server Restart
device.

Please stop by at <http://www.neuronsys.com> or at
<http://www.euro.apple.com> to read more about this offer.

Next to this we decided to lower the price for MacCoach. The higher than
expected sales volume enabled us to reduce the price for MacCoach to
US$99,-. New pricing is effective as of today.

"Obviously we expected to do well with MacCoach, but the volume we reach
surpasses our most optimistic forecast. With the Apple co-marketing deal
in place, we are now able to offer MacCoach at a lower price." according
to Chris Niemeijer, CEO of Neuron Data Systems.

Neuron Data Systems aims at providing world class solutions in hardware
and software. Our employees and staff have a long and outstanding track
record in the development and marketing of innovative and reliable
solutions.

If you have spent even a few seconds trying to figure out why someone
would buy or use a computer as boneheaded as a Windows box, you HAVE to
check out this URL:

<http://www.techtales.com/techroom.html>

This is a website of hundreds of true stories from tech support people
(Mac and Windows), and some of them are astonishing. We were all newbies
once, but did YOU ever think about spraying WD-40 on your hard drive
"because it was making a lot of noise"??

You'll spend hours alternately laughing and groaning, honest.

Subject: Tidbit - Why the Early iMac Announcement

This tidbit is from:

George Wagner, <g.wagner@sylvania.sev.org>

You may wonder why Steve Jobs broke with tradition and announced the iMac
3 months before it is to ship. I know I wondered, since it could hurt the
sales of some of the existing line as people wait. Now, there is the
obvious "get the Wintel buyers' attention," but that alone wouldn't have
been enough. Then it hit me. Windows 98 was supposed to ship the end of
June (now possibly delayed even further). IT departments are putting
their buys on hold, consumers would have been pulled into the "Windows
98" frenzy that the retailers were counting on, and the educational sites
will be starting to plan out their purchases. This gives Apple some of
the mindshare it so disparately needs, and increases their potential
market by not only preempting the Windows 98 release. The iMac may
actually beat Windows 98 to market, and may appeal to many of the
corporate types since it is designed for networks.

A note to all retailers out there. If you are concerned that a delay of
Windows 98 might hurt your potential sales, stock up on the iMac. If
you're not authorized, stock up on Mac software and advertise the heck
out of it.

Keyword: Becoming an AppleDeveloper

This tidbit is from:

John DeMillion, <JohnD@cciu.k12.pa.us>

3Com's PalmPilot development team is apparently looking for MacOS
developers to start using their recently released Conduit SDK for MacOS.
Their ReadMe <http://www.palmpilot.com/devzone/cdkmac/readme417.html> is
surprising Evangelistic (quote)

"What We Would Like You To Do: USE THIS SDK! Our MacOS customers have
been at a disadvantage for some time now, but the availability of this
Conduit SDK should enable all you eager and creative developers to devise
and produce some conduits to many of the desktop applications that are
still used by MacOS users today. Wouldn't you love for MacOS/Palm
customers to have conduit solutions that the Windows/Palm customers
don't?"

Subject: PR - People Lister 1.0.1

This announcement is from:

Sean McBride, <cwatson@cam.org>

People Lister is a an easy-to-use, Mac-only addressbook that helps you
remember everything about the people you know: phone numbers, birthdays,
email addresses, or anything else. It automatically reminds you when
someone has a birthday coming up, so you'll never forget a birthday
again! People Lister also makes it easy to send email to anyone.

If you have trouble remembering birthdays and phone numbers, then People
Lister can help you out!

People Lister is shareware. The unregistered version is fully functional,
but limited in some ways. The registered version can be obtained by
sending me something in exchange, and it's up to you (though it has to be
reasonable) I think this is the true spirit of shareware-- sharing. I
don't think this is too much to ask considering even most shareware asks
for a set amount of money.

You can get People Lister at:

Subject: Tidbit - Bungie Platform War

This tidbit is from:

Jim Ruiz, <jim@bungie.com>

Since the dawn of time computer users have filled the newsgroups with
furious but empty debate about which is the best computing platform.
Since moving to cross-platform development, Bungie has often been in the
uncomfortable middle of it all. Enough talk! Now there is a chance to
settle the question for good and win outstanding prizes in the process.

Bungie's "Myth: The Fallen Lords" is the only multiplayer computer game
in existence that allows Mac and Windows gamers to compete on a truly
level playing field. As a simultaneous, cross-platform, identical
look-and-feel release, it has a more balanced user base than any other
competitive computer game. Unanimously acclaimed the best strategy game
of 1997, its combination of fast action and subtle strategies appeals to
a wide range of gamers.

This July, 500 randomly-selected entrants will join battle on bungie.net
to win the honor of defending their platform. In August Bungie will bring
the finalists to the venerable GenCon Game Fair in Milwaukee to view the
results of this epic contest. While early promotion of the event declared
Las Vegas as the venue, the decision to relocate to GenCon expands the
scale and raises the profile of the event, while increasing its
accessibility for younger players.

An all-star cast of sponsors has lined up to donate prizes for the event.
MacAddict and PC Gamer are the Imagine Publishing sponsors and
registration sites for the event, and Imagine Radio will broadcast the
finals live over the Internet. Invaluable support and prizes are also
provided by Apple Computer, Cyberian Outpost, TechWorks and EarthLink.

As the Champion for their platform, each of the finalists will receive an
all-expenses paid trip to GenCon for the finals and receive a
top-of-the-line CPU for their platform. The prize for the Grand Champion
will be measured not in dollars, but in everlasting glory and the
gratitude of their fellow users.

More information can be found at the Bungie.net website,
<http://www.bungie.net>. Registration for the tourney begins May 15th,
when Mac Myth players can go to <http://www.macaddictnetwork.com> to
register and Windows 95 players, <http://www.pcgamer.com>.

* On a final note: Since I work for Bungie, and since Bungie will be
judging the Platform Wars, I assume it would be inappropriate for me to
express a personal preference either way for one platform or the other...

But I bet I can get away with saying: WE MAC USERS WILL KICK THOSE
PEE-SEA USERS' BUTTS!

heh heh
