This tidbit is from:

Ron Leppke, <lepprd@home.com>

Several times recently I have chided the San Francisco Chronicle business
and technical writers for being the worst of my sources for reliable and
factual computer news. Today's Sunday edition has an article titled
Apple's Doing the Right Thing by Rebecca Eisenberg. It covers almost all
of the current hot topics and is, IMHO, clearly and easily the best that
has been written anywhere.

<http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/examiner/hotnews/stories/1
7/apple.dtl>

"Moments after the first iMac graphic hit the Web, Net mailing lists
exploded: 'I want one!' 'How cute!' 'Cool!'

"Web sites sprouted saying hi to the 'new Apple Dodge Neon.'
<http://web.0sil8.com/ep/whoa/>

"On Usenet and conference boards, thousands of eager shoppers rallied:
'iMac color selection -- Can we make it happen?'

"Off-line, the print world discovered the iMac's good looks could sell
magazines. Instead of shots of Chelsea Clinton's Stanford boyfriend, both
Newsweek and Time showcased the new machine. On CNN and network TV news,
analysts compared the machine to the critically acclaimed Volkswagen
Beetle

"All this for a product that comes out in August, offered by a company
that one year ago was 'dead.'"

This action item is from:

Ron Avitzur, <avitzur@pacifict.com>

Pacific Tech just shipped version 2.0 of the Graphing Calculator in the
Apple menu. Sadly, we ran out of time and development resources and could
only complete the Windows version.

We are now reevaluating that decision and wish to survey customer
interest in a Macintosh release of Graphing Calculator 2.0. Product
details can be found at <http://www.nucalc.com>.

We ask customers who would purchase a Macintosh release to register their
interest by signing up to our mac-request mailing list. Send the word

Subject: PR - Stairways releases Assimilator 2.0.1

Keyword: Market by market, Education

This announcement is from:

Peter N Lewis, <peter@stairways.com.au>

Stairways Software, Pty Ltd, today announced the release of version 2.0.1
of Assimilator, an elegant and powerful laboratory administration tool.

What is Assimilator?

Assimilator is the product of years of managing student laboratories. It
is designed for situations where you wish to make a large number of
Macintoshes look virtually identical. Assimilator mirrors an AppleShare
server folder on to the client machines to make them all look almost
identical.

Since you generally do not want the machines to be exactly identical,
Assimilator provides a mechanism for building a database of your
machines, allowing the owner name, machine name, harddisk name and most
importantly the IP number of the client machine to be configured
automatically. It also has a method for customizing machines on an
individual or group basis.

Although Assimilator is designed for student lab situations, it has also
proven useful in other circumstances, such as for setting up newly
purchased Mac OS computers or in testing or demo labs.

Assimilator 2.0 is a major upgrade which incorporates feedback and
feature requests from lab administrators on the MacLabManager mailing
list.

Assimilator is US$10 shareware. Version 2.0 is a free upgrade to users
who registered after 1 Jan 1998. Users who registered prior to 1998 can
upgrade for US$5 per machine. Site and organisation-wide licenses are
also available for US$500 and US$2000 respectively.

Features

* Easy User Interface.
* Supports any AppleShare server (including AppleShare IP)
* Configurable control over download options using Finder labels.
* Database of machines, including owner name, machine name, volume name
and IP address.
* MacTCP and Open Transport compatibility.
* Password controlled abort.
* Support for multiple partitions and volumes.
* Assimilate from local media.
* Protected execution of administrative scripts.
* Versatile machine or group customization method.
* Extensive documentation and support.

What's New in 2.0.1?

* Single log file on the system disk.
* Fixed problems with Alias resolution.
* Fixed the balloon help.
* Fixed import database to work with 1.x databases.
* Fixed bugs with Quick Add and group lists.
* Changed memory allocation in Assimilator to something sensible .
* Various other minor changes and bug fixes.

What's New in 2.0?

* Powerful new customization features.
* Handle multiple partitions.
* Restrict to portions of volumes.
* Support AppleShareIP over TCP/IP.
* Support assimilation from CD and local volumes.
* Execute protected scripts and applications.
* Fixed several bugs.

Subject: PR - AppleShare IP 6.0 Public Beta

This announcement is from:

Apple PR

Apple Computer, Inc. today announced a public beta version of AppleShare
IP 6.0, available for immediate download from the Apple website at
www.apple.com/appleshareip/. AppleShare IP 6.0, the next version of the
Company's award-winning Mac OS server software and file-server suite,
brings feature enhancements and performance improvements to critical
network services--such as file, email, print, web and ftp--under a single
administration and security system, giving users simplified access to
information on their Mac OS server.

Key features of AppleShare IP 6.0 include: New file sharing support for
Windows clients through the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol, allowing
Windows 95 and Windows NT clients to access AppleShare IP 6.0 servers.
This provides cross-platform support for users who have networks with
mixed clients.

Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAPv4) support for POP and SMTP mail
servers, giving users the convenience and flexibility of viewing e-mail
without downloading to their computer; and an email message storage
system capable of conducting server-side searches using Apple's V-Twin
technology--offering users fast accessibility to information on the
server.

Expanded print server support for TCP/IP through industry-standard
LPR/LPD printing, allowing both Macintosh and Windows users to access
printers on AppleShare IP 6.0 servers via TCP/IP. The new printer server
also includes increased security options.

Support for third-party enhancements and plug-ins which allow users to
customize AppleShare's file, print and security capabilities.

The AppleShare IP 6.0 public beta can be downloaded now from Apple's
website at:

<http://www.apple.com/appleshareip/>

Apple expects to ship the final version of AppleShare IP 6.0 in the
second half of 1998. AppleShare IP 6.0 requires a PowerPC G3, 604e, 604,
601 or 603e-based Power Macintosh computer or server; Mac OS 8.1 or
later; Open Transport 1.3 or later; a minimum of 48MB of RAM with virtual
memory turned on, or 64MB of RAM without virtual memory; a minimum of

Subject: PR - YankPro Released

This announcement is from:

Fred Sturtevant, <freds@broadcastsoft.com>

YankPro is a commercial Macintosh product based on our successful
shareware product Yank, developed by Maui Software. Finally a reasonably
priced program to clean up your hard drive and get rid of those unwanted
files!

YankPro is a $29 Mac commercial application that does six things: 1)
Uninstalls an application and related files. You installed SurfRider on
your hard disk years ago, but you never use it? Now you can uninstall
SurfRider and all SurfRider related files. 2) Searches for duplicate
applications. How many copies of SimpleText do you really need? (only
one). 3) Searches the System Preferences folder for orphaned files.
Almost every program you ever run creates a preference file, including
those shareware programs you tried years ago just one time. 4) Slims Fat
Applications. Many applications contain two sets of code so they can run
in native mode on both PowerMacs and older 68K Macs. Now you can reduce
the size of most fat applications by up to 30%. 5) Remove unnecessary
Apple Guide files. You probably already know how to use your
applications, so there is no need to clutter up your hard disk with all
those unwanted help files. 6) Searches for orphaned alias files. An alias
file is a file that points to another file. If somehow the alias loses
track of which file it points to, it becomes an orphaned alias. Why pay a
lot more for Software that does not do as much!

YankPro is available from Software Unboxed for immediate download 24 hrs.
a day:

<http://www.unboxed.com/mac.utilities.html#YankPro>

Purchase by E-mail 24hrs. a day, or by Phone, fax during business hours
(M-F 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, PDT). Another great product developed by Maui
Software.

This tidbit is from:

Gene Wolf, <gwolf@wolfwebshops.com>

It seems the international community is "getting it" when it xomes to the
speed and power of Apple's new G3 systems. Take a look at this recent
posting on AMSYS Hot News:

<http://www.amsys.co.uk/hotnews199805/HN980519085543.html>

A portion of the posting states:

"These G3 Macs are incredibly fast," said Nigel Iskander, Director of
News Team International, the company managing photo facilities at the
Summit for the British Government's Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
"We're using 266MHz Power Macintosh G3 desktops. When we first tested
them we found they could cut the time we need to manipulate images by a
factor of four. This added speed will let us offer more pictures in less
time, which is good news at such a large event."

"When dust gets into a computer, it creates a blanket on the componentry.
This, in turn, makes the components run hotter and complicates the
connections in the machine. Naturally, the cleaner something is, the
better it runs." Glen Cleveland, Rai-Com Communications

"Most computer owners don't realize what an impact simple maintenance has
on the overall performance of their machines. In my experience, 50
percent of all hardware failures can be attributed to dust accumulation."
