Subject: ?? - Plate Tectonics Software

This request is from:

Matthew Stevens, <mls@zeta.org.au>

Is there any program available for the Mac that simulates the tectonic
plate movements for the past umpteen million years? Ideally it should
allow the user to view the Earth from any point and run the movements
forwards and backwards.

I ask purely for my own benefit. I really want to understand the subject
better.

I've searched the usual places and asked on Usenet, but the only programs
I've found are expensive and not available in Australia. Shareware would
be best.

Subject: PR - doScript Plugin 2.0 for FileMaker Pro (Mac-only)

This announcement is from:

Jeff Benjamin, <jeff@stepupsoftware.com>

I'm pleased to announce doScript Plug-in 2.0 for FileMaker Pro 4 for
Macintosh.

Version 2.0 will add the ability to activate a script when a key
combination is pressed. F1 thru F15 as well as option-key combinations
will be supported. Developers will be able to define which script
executes for which key dynamically. The script "attached" to a key can
therefore change during a user's session based on security, work
progress, foreground database, etc.

A public beta of version 2.0 is expected in early June of 1998.

Pricing for version 2.0 will remain the same as current pricing: $30 for
a single-user license; $200 for a site license; $500 for a worldwide
license; and $150 for a distribution license.

Upgrades for current owners of the product will be FREE.

This request is from:

Sharon L. Roney, <resi@pipeline.com>

I have just returned from two weeks performing soil borings and
monitoring well installations. I have always made well logs by hand,
having only a few at a time normally. Now I have 60 that I need to draw.
I'm not a CAD person so I am looking for a fairly simple template that I
can use. There are dozens of commercial PC programs for this sort of
thing but I have an all Mac company. Any help would be appreciated!

Subject: PR - CopyPaste 4.2 Now Available

This announcement is from:

julian, <julian@sierra.net>

CopyPaste provides a new and powerful paradigm for working with
information. CopyPaste multiplies the clipboard times 100 and makes it
quick and easy to archive and retrieve information using familiar Mac OS
technologies. It's a totally addictive utility that works invisibly in
the background and contains many tools that are useful to every Mac user.

CopyPaste is only available online and can be downloaded free at:

<http://www.scriptsoftware.com>

It is also on the major shareware archives and AOL.

Today with the release of version 4.2, CopyPaste is hundreds of times
better and more useful then ever before.

CopyPaste is the shareware utility that was awarded a 5 mouse rating by
MacUser and was their shareware utility of the year 1996. Shareware
Junkies declared it Mac Product of the year for 1997. CopyPaste also
appeared in the June 97 Wired and has been featured in MacWeek, TidBits,
MacAddict and many other magazines. CopyPaste magnifies the clipboard in
many different ways and has been very popular with web developers,
editors, writers, dtp professionals and everyone who uses the clipboard.

One of the early wonders of the Mac was its revolutionary ability to do
copy and paste across various applications. Unlike other areas in the
Mac's system software that have changed and progressed over the years,
copying and pasting has not evolved. How many times have you found
yourself going back and forth copying in one application and pasting in a
different application, wishing to yourself that you could copy 5-10 items
at a time, then go to another application and paste each of these items?
Now you can, with a vengeance!

* Clip Extender - now gives 100 easy to access clipboards via menu or key
command.

* CopyPaste Palette - a floating windoid that gives the easiest access to
the clipboards and to all CopyPaste features.

* Drag and Drop *** NEW *** - allows you to drag anything to and from the
CopyPaste Palette. Not only selections from a program, but also text,
picture, sound or ClipSet files can be dragged.

* Integrated Clip Viewer *** NEW *** shows the clipboard data and allows
modifications

* Clip Recorder - remembers the last 10 items copied via command c.

* Clip Archive - copied data is added to one of 10 text files on disk.

* Save Clipboards thru Restarts - allows all 100 Clipboards to be saved
thru Shutdown or Restart.

* Tag and Drop - fastest way to copy and paste data with a single
mouseclick.

* Clip Sets - Sets of 10 clipboards can be loaded and saved to disk.
Various Clip Sets can be created for different tasks. Clip Sets can also
be sent to other CopyPaste users for them to load and use.

* CopyPaste Utilities *** NEW Utilities *** - there are text utilities,
picture utilities, date and time utilities, InterNet utilities and
programmers utilities.

Subject: $$ - Mac OS Survey Software

This special offer is from:

VikR, <VikR@aol.com>

Please take a look at our product, PowerTab, <www.powerknowledge.com>,
which was given 4-1/2 stars and a "must-have" recommendation by Mac Home
Journal, and was considered best of class by MacWEEK.

PowerTab permits any business to do surveys to find out what their
customers want to see new and improved in their product line. Surveys
which used to cost tens of thousands of dollars can now be done using
PowerTab for little or no cost. PowerTab permits you to enter your survey
using a powerful survey editor. (If you like, PowerTab will even
interview you about your business, and write your survey for you!)
PowerTab does all the page layout for your survey automatically, saving
you hours. You can then print the survey out on paper, or output it as
HTML and place it on a web site -- PowerTab makes it easy to collect data
from a web site survey. Once you have collected your data, PowerTab makes
reports for you automatically. PowerTab makes it easy for you to look at
results by special subgroups of your interviewees, for example, customers
who spend a lot of money with you, versus customers who spend less money
with you; or new customers versus customers who have been with you for a
longer time. PowerTab is useful to business, government, and educational
users.

Are you a FileMaker user? If you have data files about your customers in
FileMaker, PowerTab can automatically make survey-style reports for that
data, telling what percent of customers have each value in every field of
your data file.

A free demo of PowerTab is available on our web site. This demo is fully
functional, and will work for three weeks. PowerTab is normally just $199
- -- we would like to make a _special_offer_ to Evangelist readers. For the
next 30 days, PowerTab is available to Evangelist readers for just $149.
To take advantage of this special offer, download the Evangelist Offer
free demo of PowerTab from <http://www.loop.com/~vik/>. The demo will be
fully functional until June 30, 1998, after which time you will be able
to buy it for $149.

Subject: ?? - Mac Web BBS Software Needed

This request is from:

Tom Ainscough, <tainscough@umassd.edu>

We are creating a new Web site aimed at academia. One feature we have
planned for the site is a bulletin board service. Right now our favorite
Web BBS software is Ultimate BB (see <"http://www.ultimatebb.com/"> for
the features of Ultimate BB). Unfortunately, it is a PERL script, and
only runs only on UNIX and Windows NT-based servers.

I hate to be forced to use a Windows server, but we can't find ANYTHING
that will run on a Mac, and we don't want to write the scripts from
scratch. (I've been told that MacPerl is too different from Perl to run
the Ultimate scripts without heavy modification.)

Has anyone ever gotten Ultimate BB to run on a Mac under MacPerl?

- -or-

Does anyone know of a high-quality (as good as Ultimate) Web BBS script
that will run on a Mac server? (We would be especially interested in a BB
script that runs under FileMaker Pro, because we will be using that for
our database engine if we do go with a Mac server.)

- -and-

If you are interested in a Mac version of a *great* Web BBS system for
your site, you may want to contact the author of Ultimate BB. Maybe he
would consider a MacPerl version if there was enough interest. You can
contact him through the site listed above. (Please don't flame him, he is
a nice guy and that won't help.) You should only contact him if you are
really interested in his product.

Okay, this is sort of cheating, but this was SUCH a good question I
thought I would post it and a few resources that I turned up during my
own attempts at finding exactly that kind of software:

<http://www.strom.com/ics/wc.html>

This links to a page listing pretty much all the software for web forums,
discussions, bulletin boards. It's cross platform, so you have to wade
through a few Unix, Windows, OS/2 (!!!) listings, but there are quite a
few good packages listed.

While something like Web Crossing is INCREDIBLE for a commercial high
traffic site, you might do well to check out something like Interaction
<http://interaction.in-progress.com>.
