Subject: Mac Report Servers Temporarily Overwhelmed

This announcement is from:

Lucas Roebuck, lroebuck@pacbell.net

May 25, 1998

Greetings,

I just wanted to let you know that we have had overwhelming response
since we announced the Mac Report on Friday. In fact that response was so
overwhelming, that our server couldn't handle the load and a lot of
would-be subscribers got nasty error messages, mostly related when trying
to submit to our database. Lucky for us at The Mac Report, the fine folks
at our Internet Presence Provider, TwIN Media Group
(<http://www.blowyouaway.com>) worked on the problem this Memorial Day
weekend. The servers are beefed up, tweaked and ready to take more
subscriptions.

So if you want to subscribe to the free newsweekly for Macintosh
professionals, just point your browser to <http://www.macreport.com>.

Thanks for your patience. We can't wait to deliver the best Macintosh
publication around.

Subject: PR - Deal-mac Readers take 2% off at ClubMac

This announcement is from:

deal-mac news, <news@deal-mac.com>

ClubMac <http://www.club-mac.com> announced today a 2 percent discount
off all online orders for deal-mac <http://deal-mac.com> readers. This
additional 2 percent discount will be subtracted from the prices already
offered on ClubMac's web site and is good through Wednesday, May 27, at
midnight Pacific time.

ClubMac's web site has recently been redesigned from the ground up to
provide better service, easier shopping, and total security. It now
offers the ability to check stock through connections to the company's
inventory system. After placing orders, customers can follow the order
status from the time they are placed until they reach their final
destination.

To take advantage of the 2 percent discount, readers must access ClubMac
through a special link from the deal-mac web site. The 2 percent discount
is added after billing information is requested but before an order is
finalized.

deal-mac, published by Danrich Internet LLC (Huntsville, AL), is the
web's leading source on where to buy Macintosh. Started in March of 1997,
deal-mac has been visited by over 3.5 million readers in search of deals.
deal-mac can be reached at (541) 684-0173 or on the Internet at

Subject: PR - Apollo 2.0 Released

This announcement is from:

Jeremy Roussak, <JeremyR@dcs.qmw.ac.uk>

Apollo is a launching utility. You configure a menu containing those
applications, control panels, desk accessories, folders and documents you
use frequently. Then, whatever you are doing, a click of the mouse pops
up the menu and lets you open any of the configured items. You can
organise items into groups, with each group having its own submenu. If a
group is made "active", selecting its name makes Apollo open all the
items in the group seriatim. Apollo can automatically control the sound
level and screen depth for each application, changing them as you switch
between applications. It also has facilities for switching between
applications using the keyboard.

New features in version 2.0 are too numerous to list, but include lots of
native PowerMac code, completely rewritten configuration, many more
preference options, the ability to assign hot keys for items in Apollo's
menus, much more control over the look of the popup menu, including
different colours and styles for different kinds of item, etc etc etc.

Apollo 2.0 is shareware: the fee is US$30, 15 pounds sterling or the
equivalent of US$30 in your local currency. There are significant
discounts for multiple-copy and site licences. There is no upgrade fee
for registered users of previous versions. Registration can be made via
Kagi Shareware. Registration and online registration utilities are
provided as part of the package.

Apollo 2.0 requires system 7 (it is fully compatible with system 8) and a
Mac with a 68020 or better processor. It is available in English,
Japanese, French, German and Dutch.

Jerry Hamm, <jerry@solaceconsulting.com>

Just wanted to pass on a recent article in the May 20, 1998 Email from
the InternetWeek Newsletter. I feels good to hear good news from the
"Outside":

Apple's Profits, Market Share and Confidence Continue Rising

"At the end of the heavy rains that recently swept the country, TV
weather forecasters joked that the audience shouldn't panic if they see a
bright yellow object in the sky--it's the sun.

"In the same vein, Apple users need not panic when they receive good news
about their vendor. Apple's supporters say that the company has turned
itself around, and even skeptics say that the company has at least halted
its decline."

This announcement is from:

Leslie Pieri, <ljpieri@aognet.net>

If you are looking for a new, interesting, fun game Mac game on the
internet, well, look to the new Gameworld Internet Club.

Whats Gameworld got in store for all the gamers anxious for something
new? Try Lords of the Cubicles, a humorous game of office politics. An
oxymoron you say? Yeah well, tell us working at the office isnt an
oxymoron as well. Those that identify with this are ready for Lords of
the Cubicles. You and your fellow coworkers try to maximize the good
things then get out of work (buzzword mastery, highly visible overtime,
big bonuses), while avoiding that pesky downside (interminable meetings,
product disasters, projects o doom). The play revolves around easy card
mechanics, mixed with a dash of diplomacy or duplicity.

Playtesters are an important part of gaming and, at the moment, for
Gameworld Internet Club. Playtester signups are being taken at the
Gameworld site <http://www.gameworld.com> for their upcoming beta testing
scheduled through July. Commercial launch is slated for summer. Gameworld
games offer single and multiplayer games, from traditional favorites such
as spades to new offerings such Lords of the Cubicles and a fantasy
adventure game.

Gameworlds developers, Adventure Online Gaming, Inc., have developed a
java-based toolset that allows non-programmers to deploy games on the
internet. This toolset allows AOG to partner with game developers in
bringing traditional board and card games to the internet. Adding new
games each month, the Gameworld game collection will continue to grow
keeping the gaming challenge alive. Sign up for beta playtesting today!

Subject: Tidbit - Apple User Group Tour Begins in Kansas City

This tidbit is from:

David W. Brown, <davewb@qni.com>

Kansas City was the first stop on the Apple User Group Tour which kicked
off at the regular meeting of Kansas City's Macintosh User Group -
MacCore - on Wednesday night, May 20th.

We had present about 250 of our 394 members of record - we ran out of
chairs, so it was SRO. Note that we signed up 22 (count 'em twenty-two
new members, some of them folks who were former members whom we hadn't
seen in 3 or 4 years). Last year at this time our user group was doing
pretty well, with 325 members. Notice the jump? It has all happened in
the last 6 months or so.

We got a great presentation, including a video of the hilarious
comparison between the G-3 Macs and a Compaq 400mhz Pentium II MMX
machine. Needless to say, it brought cheers from the crowd when even the
iMac finished way ahead.

All I can say is that if you are in a Mac User Group, and you have a
chance to see the show, by all means make a special effort to attend. It
was very informative in terms of both the new hardware design concepts,
and the positioning of System X in the path of MacOS development. While
we have always felt strongly about the Mac's obvious advantages, it is
nice to get first hand information from the horse's mouth as it were.

Incidentally, no new hardware was present, but the videos more than made
up for it. Our presentor, Grant Hansen, who has been the local Mac rep in
Kansas City for the last five years volunteered to come back and bring
his G-3 portable to demo ( if he ever gets it ).

Anyway, it was a great show - at least equal to David Pogue's riotously
funny visit to our group last month.

Subject: PR - Choosing The Best in VIDI 3D Model Contest

This announcement is from:

VIDInick, <VIDInick@aol.com>

Exciting things are happening in 3D on the Macintosh. VIDI, in
cooperation with Gord Lacey and his EI Resources website, MacAddict
magazine, and StrataUser magazine, recently sponsored three contests that
posed an interesting challenge to 3D artists and designers. The
contestants were given the formidable task of learning a new spline-based
modeler and using it to create realistic 3D models with a maximum model
size limit of 200K. The contests enabled StudioPro and EIAS users the
opportunity to get a free version of VIDI's powerful, spline-based
Modeler and use their respective rendering products to complete their
work.

The winners of the three contests are presented on the VIDI site at
www.vidi.com in the "Contest Winners" area. While each winner was judged
best in its rendering category, which of these three winning enties is
the best overall? Is it the one created with Electric Image,
StrataStudioPro, or VIDI's Presenter 3D? Now you have an opportunity to
choose the overall winner and possibly win a VIDI t-shirt. Look at the
entries shown below and email the name of the one you you feel is the
best along with your name, email address, and shirt size to
<may@vidi.com>.

It's pretty amazing what all were able to accomplish with a spline-based
modeler and only 200K to work with. All the winners chose to use the
spline- based power of VIDI's Modeler to build character-based models,
one of the most difficult subjects to sculpt. And they all did it in 200K
or less with only two weeks to learn the product and without access to
the manuals. You too can get the same free, full-featured (Save included)
version of VIDI's Modeler they used by selecting DOWNLOAD on the VIDI
site at www.vidi.com. We are also extending the offer of a 60% discount
on Modeler and Presenter 3D to anyone voting in the contest until the
final judging is over. Send a note to us at <vidisales@vidi.com> if you
are interested.
