Dragonfly Digital Design today announced a new beta release of FrameBlenderQT for the Macintosh. FrameBlender products use oversampling to increase the quality of still images captured with video equipment. A sequence of frames that has been captured with a video camera is blended together into a single image. This effectively removes noise from the image and dramatically improves image quality.
FrameBlenderQT is a QuickTime Movie Export component which can be used with Apple's MoviePlayer or any program that supports QuickTime export components.
FrameBlenderQT is primarily useful to remove random noise. Since the noise is different in every frame, blending many frames together acts to cancel out the noise. This is effective with video noise and certain compression artifacts. Alternative uses include simulating a time exposure by blending the frames of a time lapse movie and creating motion blur effects by blending frames with movement.
This is version 1.0b3, the third public beta. This version requires a Macintosh with Apple's QuickTime software. It works with MoviePlayer 2.5 and MoviePlayer 3.0 Pro. Adobe has told Furbo Filters principals Craig Hockenberry and Jeffrey Zeldman that they will be bundling Furbo Filters with their upcoming ImageReady image processor for web designers. (Furbo Filters are already being bundled with Photoshop 5.)
Furbo Filters are $39 shareware plugins that automate web design tasks and create special visual effects. If you haven't yet sprung for the Adobe software, you may download fully functional versions of the Furbo Webmasters Series and Furbo Designer Pack from:

The filters are Mac-only, and work in Photoshop 5, Photoshop 4, Photoshop 3, ImageReady, and Macromedia Fireworks.
The Web Designers series consists of three plugins: BROWSER PREVIEW, WEB POSTERIZE, and WEB SCRUBBER.
BROWSER PREVIEW lets you compare how your final image will look under various Mac and Windows gamma settings. (Three PC gamma settings are available. Change them at the click of a button.) It also shows you how the image will look as a gif (at various color levels, using various color schemes, including the web-safe color cube) or JPEG (at various user-selectable compression levels). All these variations interact with one another much as they do in ImageReady and Fireworks.
WEB POSTERIZE is the only plugin (or application) that lets you work inside the color cube _before_ optimizing your image as a gif or jpeg; on a single layer or multiple layers; with fine control over contrast and hue. It makes the smallest GIF files possible because it maximizes the gif compression algorithm by rendering your image in large, non-dithering areas of flat color (rather than dithering the image, which creates much larger file sizes).
WEB SCRUBBER allows you to selectively shift main color areas into the web-safe color palette while leaving intermediate areas untouched. It is adapted from work begun by Todd Fahrner at Studio Verso/Agitprop, and has earned Todd's and Verso's approval. (They no longer recommend their own web scrubber; they recommend Furbo.)
