We have been using macs at the Malden Public Library since 1984...our MacPlus and Mac SE still soldier on for specific tasks to this day. In 1996 we opened a new addition and were required to purchase pc's for our shared computer system which would be using Windows....at the same time we bought 2 powermac 7200/90's for office/graphics work.
Every one of the pc's have been back to the manufacturer for replacement parts or troubleshooting...it became so disruptive on our main information desk that we 'stole' a powermac from the office and installed in on the information desk. That was two months ago. We had to 'retrain' our librarians for the mac o/s which took about 20 minutes, but they missed the task bar. We purchased GOMAC for the powermac and now they have no confusion going from the mac to windows. We now have a secure workstation. Incidentally, not one of our macs have seen a technician for repair or anything else. Now that is a track record!

I've just finished an in depth look at using a RAID on a Mac. About a month ago, I built a RAID to be used on my own Mac, and I've been very happy with the results. In the review, I share my experiences and help readers build their own RAID. The review is a great resource for users who are just curious about disk arrays or want to build or update their own RAID.
Simply put, a RAID is when you take two or more hard drives and combine them so your Mac utilizes the drives as a single volume. A RAID can be used to increase performance, reliability, or both.

A number of readers have requested that I keep them apprised of the status of Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible for IDG, so I thought I'd jot a quick note now that I have a bit of breathing room in the schedule.
After a few weeks (weeks that felt more like I was trying to write a new term paper every day than a book), I've gotten the first draft done. Now it goes through the fine people at IDG Books and elsewhere who have been brought on the project as technical and development editors. It's shaping up very nicely, not the least of which are the anecdotes and tips provided by experts and Evangelistas. I've updated the list of needs below -- please write me if you have an anecdote or tip. I can't use them all, but I've been using a lot of them, and it's really making the book a pleasurable read for a reference guide. I can still fit some in at this phase, but I only have about 10 days left!
If you have an Evangelista Tip or Anecdote that you'd like featured in a sidebar in this book, let me know. So far about 25 tips have been used, with a ton of other mail coming in to support the project and ask about updates. I welcome all your messages of encouragement, criticism, suggestions and just plain support. Just try to send them by June 15.
Here's a list of the type of anecdote/tip I can still use:

The story, "HBO Over the 'Moon'", says that fans were so pleased with the Hanks directed series "From the Earth to the Moon" that they're developing more mini-series. One such series will be done with Hanks and will focus on the history of the Apple computer company.

Does anyone know where I can get a font called "Wet Paint"? I used to have it until I experienced a hard drive "incident". The characters look like they were painted with a wide paint brush. All my other fonts except for this one made it into a backup file, and I can't remember where I got it. My web searches have been fruitless.
