This tidbit is from:
William I. MacGregor, <macgregor@austin.apc.slb.com>
Smart Card security has come to the Macintosh!
Check out Litronic NetSign <http://www.litronic.com> for the Mac. The kit includes a Smart Card reader, crypto-capable Smart Card, power supply, documentation, and a coupon for a VeriSign Digital ID (tm) that can be loaded onto the card.
The kit is installed on my PowerBook 3400c. The NetSign kit works with recent versions of Netscape Communicator and Navigator (US domestic, strong-crypto versions only). Installation was simple, I just plugged the Smart Card reader into the serial port and ran the installer. Then I requested a certificate from VeriSign. Next I used the private key and certificate stored on the card for SSL v3.0 client authentication and S/MIME signing.
Litronic and Schlumberger partnered to produce the kit (also available in Unix and Windows versions). The reader and driver were supplied by Litronic, and the Smart Card is a Schlumberger Cryptoflex card.
Other Smart Card readers and software will work with PC emulation software on the Mac, but it's great to see a Mac native solution that supports the full performance of a PowerPC-native browser!

This request is from:
Quinn Perkins, <quinn@digital-ventures.com>
One of our better clients is a publishing company with 15-20 Macs in the prepress department and 90+ Windows 95 based PC's in the rest of the company in areas such as sales, customer services, etc.
The IS department (decidedly pro Microsoft and anti-Mac) has asked if they can put a WindowsNT Workstation computer in the prepress department to get the opinions of a Mac user on which system is better. (The Mac user is the proud owner of a new G3). I suggested that to make the test fair we put a Mac G3 running Office 98 next to a Windows 95 terminal running Office 97.
They have accepted the challenge.
I feel confident that the Mac in prepress will shred the PC in speed, functionality and user friendliness. We will be providing basic training to the Windows 95 user who will have the honor of trying out a new G3 Mac. I was hoping some of the Evangelistas might have some suggestions on what we can show a Wintel Office user quickly that will help score some easy points for the MacOS. I am also looking for any suggestions how to minimize compatibility issues between the Mac and the other PC's and allow the Win95 user to feel comfortable in the MacOS system (like the GoMac bar). The feedback from these users will be made very public with the upper management and I'm hoping for a coop. I'll make results of the test available to the web for those who might be interested.
Thanks in advance,
Quinn Perkins Digital Ventures
