StepUp Software is pleased to announce the first public beta release of modifyWindow Plug-in for FileMaker Pro 4 for Macintosh.
modifyWindow allows the FileMaker developer to customize some of the look and feel of their database windows in ways not provided by the tool from FileMaker, Inc.
FileMaker Pro developers need to provide navigational control in their solutions so users stay within the context of their use of the solution. "We first aided in this need with the removeMenu plugin. We're now adding an additional level of control by being able to remove the close box from any FileMaker window," said Jeff Benjamin, developer of the modifyWindow plugin. "Often a user will close a window by clicking on the close box rather than what the solution developer intended for them to use: a button on the layout. By removing the close box, the user will always navigate out of a window as intended." As Steven Blackwell, Partner Member in the FileMaker Solutions Alliance, has said about the removeMenu Plugin: "That will make these solutions more stable and will lessen user-induced "accidents"."
modifyWindow also adds support for renaming windows. Window names as they appear in a window's title bar are an important part of a solutions "polished" look. FileMaker by itself forces window names to be the name of the database, like "invoice_.fp3" and "line_items_.fp3". With the modifyWindow plugin, solution developers can use user-friendly window names such as "Invoices" and "Line Items".
modifyWindow Plug-in will ship in August and may be ordered online at the StepUp Software web site <http://www.stepupsoftware.com/>. Cost is $30. Site licenses and distribution licenses are also only $30.
A fully functional beta version can be downloaded at: <http://rampages.onramp.net/~stepup/modifyWindow/index.html>

Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 08:06:26 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - Filemaker Pro Questions
This request is from:
Wired Women, <gm7234@sover.net>
In September, I will be setting up a database of pediatricians that will be submitting manuscripts for a new publication. Since I have always worked with canned peecee programs that track and report these manuscripts, I am now responsible for setting up a database of my own choosing.
In trying to avoid a Microsoft product, I have been given the okay to use Filemaker Pro. My questions are- can I use Virtual PC on my Mac to install and use the PC version of Filemaker Pro on both machines since I will be working at home quite a bit? AND- does any other Evangelistas have experience setting up a manuscript tracking database or template for Filemaker Pro?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Date: Fri, 31 Jul 1998 08:06:31 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - Position Description Software
This request is from:
Jack Turner, <turner@4j.Lane.edu>
I've been asked by my school district's Human Relations office to recommend a Mac-based application to help them update all position descriptions in a common format. And better yet, this app. would provide sample language slugs for all school district positions from Superintendent to classroom aides!
I'm the district's "computer guy", but this request is _way_ out of my depth. Any replies with suggested titles and first-hand experience will be much appreciated.
Thanks, Jack Turner Eugene [OR] School District Technology Coordinator

Farallon, a division of Netopia Inc., today announced a full-range of connectivity solutions to network the iMac. The new EtherMac iPrint Adapter LT, due to ship in September, will allow for the integration of iMacs with existing printers and other network devices in homes, schools and businesses. Additionally, starting August 15th - specially for the iMac, Farallon is running a limited-time promotional offer on EtherWave Printer Adapters to connect iMacs and LocalTalk devices. Both the EtherMac iPrint Adapter LT and EtherWave Printer Adapters eliminate the need for iMac owners to purchase new printers for use with their iMac.
Farallon's new 8-port 10/100 Fast Starlet Dual Speed Hub is the perfect networking solution for iMacs and other networked devices. Every port seamlessly works at 10 or 100Mbps, allowing users to take full advantage of the iMac's built-in 10/100 network interface for maximum throughput, while providing the ability to easily integrate existing 10Base-T Ethernet devices.
Just thought that all of the Evangelistas would be interested in knowing that Computers.com is currently giving an iMac away. The current contest ends Aug. 5. Computers.com is giving away computers all throughout the summer, and a Mac has been included every week so far. The URL is:
