Date: Mon, 17 Aug 1998 08:06:54 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Followup - PC Dongles Are Bad News On the Mac
This follow-up message is from:
<Pgher@aol.com>
I wanted to followup to my question regarding the use of a PC parallel port dongle on the Mac. I received about 40 responses in 3 days, several of which indicated that I am not the only one with this problem. Several readers wrote suggesting some sort of serial to parallel adapter, including Peter Wright of Alternate Systems, who dialed long distance from the Middle East to reply! Creative Solutions in Rockville, MD was listed as a source of those.
Another suggestion was an Apple made serial to parallel PCI (available from CDW) card which was an option for Apple's own PC cards. This apparently will not work on its own, however.
Finally, there were a number of people, including John Rizzo (the editor and webmaster at <http://www.macwindows.com> ) who said an OrangePC card or a PC are the only working solutions. Apparently the way VPC handles the ports would not allow it to work with a parallel port dongle.
I do have one last bit of hope for my particular problem - Paul Magee of ITP Ltd. knows one of the developers at Trados and has asked him if he knows any solution.
Again, thanks to all who wrote with suggestions!

This tidbit is from:
Robert Smallman, <smallman@dwave.net>
The CD-ROM drive on my StarMax failed the other day, so I called Motorola and they had a technician out the next day to fix it. When she was testing the new drive I had to remind her that on the Mac OS you drag the CD icon to the trash to release the CD. She apologized and told me that though she had been trained to work on Macs they are so dependable that she rarely gets a chance to repair them!

This tidbit is from:
Dan Knight, <dknight@mail.iserv.net>
If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times. "The iMac won't sell because it costs over $1,000." "The market is $1,000 PCs, not $1,300 ones." "Apple is missing the real market."
The iMac channel has already shown that the best selling budget systems cost more than the iMac, thanks to research by PC World. Now, using information from PC Magazine, the iMac channel demonstrates that when you build a system around a sub-$1K computer, the price is not that far from the iMac's retail.

Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 08:06:26 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - Filemaker Modem Help
This request is from:
Martin Parks, <mparks1@elp.rr.com>
I'm stuck.
My boss has asked me to develop a "call center" database that stores contact information, client info and tracks who was called when. However, I want to take the database one step further: I want my diamond suprasonic voice modem with headset to automatically dial the phone numbers for me.
My problem is this: Filemaker's default modem init string gives me a message of "will hang up in 55 seconds," when all I want is for the modem to dial the number and then get out of the picture. Obviously, Filemaker is waiting for a carrier signal or something along those lines. But Filemaker's online support for modem dialing seems to be a little weak.
Can someone help me directly, or point me in the direction for information?

This tidbit is from:
<DRwhite55@aol.com>
I know what you are thinking, "Oh no not another Mac publication, what more do I need to know?" Well, the Mac Users Militia has a twist that I think all Evangelistas should check out. This publication is put out by 4 home schooled kids (11, 12, and 2 - 15 year olds) from Middletown and Kokomo Indiana. They do all of their own product reviews and give many of their own user tips for games, applications, and hardware. The editorials provide a window on how younger Mac users view the future of Apple and the Mac. The writing is very solid, and believe it or not better than some of the commercial publications. You can get a yearly subscription for all of $5.00 a year. It is a great investment in supporting young Mac users, and you just might learn something you didn't already know.

Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 08:06:27 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: !! - Want GlobalFax For G3 Macs
This action item is from:
Geoff Strickler, <geoff@dbis.com>
To all owners of Apple PowerMac G3 Desktop and PowerBook Computers with internal 56K flex modems: Are you interested in running GlobalFax with this configuration? If so, Boca Global Inc. wants to hear from you.
They're asking if you would be willing to pay $40 for GlobalFax for your G3 with an internal (private labelled) Apple modem. Check their Web page <http://www.globalvillage.com/G3poll.html> for more details or, send an email to <G3feedback@globalvillage.com> and put YES in the subject header.
I suggested to Global Village to offer GlobalFax for non GV modems everytime I registered a GV modem and they never responded. At least Boca seems willing to consider it, even if it is only on their private labelled 56k Apple modems. They haven't committed to make release such a product, they're just looking for feedback. Let 'em know what you think.
If you're not familiar with GlobalFax, it's Global Village's excellent fax send/receive software that is Mac only (and presently, only works with genuine GV modems). It's the best fax software I've seen on ANY platform, and I've seen quite a few fax programs on MacOS, DOS, Windows 3.x/95/NT, and Linux.

Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 08:06:29 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - New MacWebserver Resource Site
This tidbit is from:
Doug Noble, <dnoble@netrox.net>
We are pleased to announce the opening of MacWebserver, the new Macintosh Web Hosting Resource Site at <http://www.macwebserver.com>
Mac webmasters can now quickly locate and compare Mac hosting services worldwide with the features they need. MacWebserver provides a fully searchable database to locate ISPs offering Mac-based web hosting. Specific search parameters include state, country, and hosts that provide Filemaker, Lasso, Tango, or WebFM database hosting, among others. You can also choose to search based on type of server, such as WebTen, WebStar or Quid Pro Quo.
In addition to the ISP listing, MacWebserver offers information on Listservs of interest to webmasters. We will be enhancing the site further with links to newsgroups and Mac web-related shareware and commercial software providers, as well as editorial and news on what's happening on the Mac web hosting front.
ISPs can add their listing online FREE OF CHARGE. The site also provides ISPs with the means to edit their listing as they add new services. Mac ISPs, please visit our site and add your free listing now. MacWebserver offers ISPs and other vendors banner advertising opportunities to increase visibility on the site.
Feel free to email us with comments, our goal is to keep improving the site.

Date: Tue, 18 Aug 1998 08:06:26 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: Tidbit - New At MacTimes
The site grew out of a need to address the local situation in Grand Rapids, Michigan, when the public school system quietly bought nearly $800,000 of Wintel equipment after school let out in June.
Although GRPS has been primarily Macintosh (estimated at 75-80%), no funds were allocated for the most popular educational computer, no teachers were consulted, and no needs study was done to determine that a move to Windows made sense.
Working with a couple teachers, a few Apple people, and Mac fans around the world, we created a site pointing out the problems of Wintel (like Year 2000 compliance for Windows 3.11 and NT) and the benefits of Macintosh.
So many visitors wrote to thank us for this resource that we decided to reorganize it, take out the specific local issues, and give it a more visible home.
As a parent of students in the Grand Rapids Public Schools and as editor in chief at MacTimes, I hope this will help others as much as it has helped our cause locally. We haven't won yet, but a year with Wintel and Novell might be enough to get the administration to reconsider.
