Date: Tue, 3 Nov 1998 08:06:41 -0800 From: John Halbig <john@garage.com> Subject: ?? - MIDI Interface For iMac
This request is from:
<mailto: "Marc Burgauer" marc@mail.printrain.com>
The iMac is a hit. Lots of my musician friends that are considering to buy a computer ask me, if the iMac would be a good choice. There's this one issue that makes me hesitant to say 'yes'.
I haven't heard or read of any MIDI interface being available for the iMac. I know that there are some Serial-Bus-To-UBS converters, but since MIDI is a real-time thing (even if it's only 8-bit), I wonder if they do the trick. (Memories of MIDI Interfaces not working with the PowerBooks come to mind as well.)
While we're at it.. how about the MIDI and Audio software packages? What are you using? Any experiences with iMac and some of the popular MIDI/Audio packages, like CubaseVST, LogicAudio, StudioVision, DigitalPerformer?
Anybody out there having any experiences with iMac and MIDI? Please let me know. I will gladly let this list know about any findings.

A Mac Java tool called AgentSheets was used to simulate the behavior of E. coli bacteria in microgravity aboard the Discovery space shuttle with John Glenn.
AgentSheets is a construction kit to build interactive SimCity-like simulations and games that can be exported as superfast Java applets (no Java programming required). Applets generated run 50 times faster than any comparable product on the PC. See examples at:
<http://www.agentsheets.com/showcase.html> and get a FREE beta version from
<http://www.agentsheets.com/>
AgentSheets is designed for the Mac, and provides users with high-level access to Apple technology that includes ...
- - Java MRJ - - Text-to-speech - - TCP/IP (to read web page content into simulation/game in real time) - - Sound - - QuickTime Music - - AppleEvents

Folks-
Apple has a web page (http://www.apple.com/publishing/internet/kai/) that describes how a design firm used MkLinux to set up a mission- critical web server. Although the page is rather short on specifics, it does give the reader a very warm feeling about the use of MkLinux.
The firm was very happy about being able to use a new G3 and an old 8500, rather than having to go out and buy PC hardware...

The Argus Observer is a daily newspaper with circulation 7,800 (Sunday through Friday) looking for a qualified Macintosh expert. Alco Blom, alco@xs4all.nl
Where do you keep your confidential data?
Like most people these days, you've probably got a growing number of user IDs, passwords, registration keys, PINs, serial numbers, and the like, stored in various places on your Mac or scribbled on miscellaneous pieces of paper around your home or office. When you stop and think about it, you probably have more of these pesky bits of information scattered about than you realize.
Now there is a software program to manage passwords and the like: it is called Web Confidential. It uses an intuitive, easy-to-use cardfile metaphor which will enable even novice users to get up to speed in no time. Power users will find a large number of options to enable them to configure Web Confidential to meet their specific needs.
Web Confidential offers 448-bit encryption.
Web Confidential 1.1 is Mac OS 8.5-savvy and is available in English and Japanese.
Web Confidential is $25 shareware.
Web Confidential 1.0.2 is available in German and French. Updates to 1.1 will soon be available.
Regarding my previous post to MacWay, I'd like to mention that URL Manager Pro 2.0.5 is also available in German and Japanese.

TitlePop installs a pop-up menu in the title bar of every window, allowing you to instantly access not only all the windows owned by that particular program, but also of any program currently running, including the Finder. (Savvy Mac users know that the Finder has a similar feature, which creates a pop-up menu of an open folder's parent folder(s) when you press the command key while clicking on the title bar. TitlePop is aware of this, and allows the Finder to create this menu when the command key is pressed, just like normal.)
In addition, version 3.0 of TitlePop now allows you to drag and drop files or data into any application or directly into open documents through the pop-up menu!
TitlePop 3.0.4 is compatible with Mac OS 8.5. You may also visit the TitlePop home page at <http://www.datavasara.fi/titlepop>.
________
IMHO, TitlePop is an essential product to use. I run it constantly on all the Macs I use.
