Name the Game Guy contest gets underway- over a thousand dollars in prizes

Familiar with the old adage "To the victor go the spoils?" Well,
MacGaming.com has a new contest to tell you about, and boy, do the
victors get some spoils this time- over a thousand bucks' worth of
spoils, to be precise. We've got graphics accelerators, joysticks and hot
game titles to give away!

MacGaming.com's redesign incorporated a new mascot you'll be seeing more
of: our own game guy, the fellow with his hand on the joystick and his
thumb in the air, reminding everyone who sees him of how much Mac gaming
kicks butt. The folks around the office haven't been able to come up with
a good name for this fellow, so we're leaving it up to readers to name
the Game Guy instead. We're encouraging everyone to put on their thinking
caps and come up with names for this guy that are funny, creative, and
interesting. There aren't any rules outside of the obvious: no obscenity.
Most of all, the name has to be something that doesn't suck, because our
Game Guy is gonna be stuck with it forever.

After the polls close we're going to pick the names we like the most and
start doling out prizes. The Grand Prize winner and some runners up will
get prize packages that will blow your mind, thanks to the participation
of vendors like VillageTronic, CH Products, MacSoft, Aspyr Media,
Electronic Arts, and Ambrosia Software. We're pulling out all the stops!
Just look at what we're giving away!

Name the Game Guy Contest Prizes

Grand prize winner: VillageTronic MacMagic 8 MB Voodoo Graphics
accelerator, CH Products ADB joystick, throttle and pedal rig (or
USB-based GameStick 3D, if the winner prefers), MacSoft' Unreal, Aspyr
Media's Tomb Raider II, Electronic Arts' FutureCop: LAPD, and Ambrosia
Software's Ambrosia CD.

First runner up: VillageTronic MacMagic 8 MB Voodoo Graphics accelerator,
MacSoft's Unreal, Aspyr Media's Carmageddon, Electronic Arts' FutureCop:
LAPD, and Ambrosia Software's Ambrosia CD.

The second, third and fourth runners up will also receive MacSoft's
Unreal, EA's FutureCop: LAPD, Ambrosia Software's Ambrosia CD's, and
assorted prizes from Aspyr Media.

Give our Game Guy the best name you can think of! Visit
<http://www.macgaming.com> and get started!

<mailto: Archulet@aol.com>

Greetings fellow Mac fanatics...

I am writing to announce the "Grand Opening" of Icon Land.

<http://members.aol.com/SlickHick/IconLand.html>

Icon Land is the home of over 500 quality icons for the Mac. If that
isn't enough, check out the Icon Land Icon Directory.

Icon Land has been around for about two years--it's just taken me that
long to make it worthy of announcing to the Evangelist.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback on how to improve Icon Land, but
more importantly I hope you like the icons.

Subject: Tidbit - CNET Download.Com Premiere - GoMac 1.6

This tidbit is from:

<mailto: "Domi Miyamoto" domim@cnet.com>

CNET Download.com has launched a Premiere for GoMac, the terrific taskbar
by Proteron that adds more ammo to Apple's arsenal of reasons why the Mac
is the most!

GoMac 1.6 is totally Mac OS 8.5 compatible, from its support for the
Control Strip 2.0 to its ability to access application memory settings
from the taskbar contextual menus. And while GoMac is clearly inspired by
the functionality of the Windoze Start menu and Program bar, this version
includes a customizable Start button to help take you that one step
beyond what passes for the standard Wintel "style." These are the biggest
changes to GoMac, though many other enhancements and bug fixes have also
been made, so even if you already have an older version of GoMac, why not
be good to your Mac and treat it to a download of the latest one?

I've been an avid Mac gamer as long as there have been Macs and computer
games, but I've always been frustrated by the lack of coverage of Mac
games by the mainstream gaming press. A recent event, however, has given
me hope that trend is about to change.

Next-Generation Online (http://www.next-generation.com), one of the most
respected publications in the video and compter gaming industries,
recently inaugurated a new Mac column and has stated their committment to
thoroughly cover Mac gaming. They even have a forum where Mac gamers can
discuss their favorite games and all things Macintosh.

I hope all the Mac gamers out there who have been looking for quality
coverage of present and future Mac game titles, will give Next-Generation
a try and show them that we are worthy of their efforts.

I read with interest in Digest #1309 of the guerilla tactic employed by
<mailto:SCHOLTZP@wartburg.edu> in setting the school browsers to go to
the Apple iMac homepage by default. I have done the same thing in my
office, but went one step further.

I took the desktop images of the iMac and the 'Pentium II snail' and
using GraphicConverter turned them into Windows BMP files. I copied the
files to a PC formatted floppy and then copied them to our NT 4.0
servers. Then, I set the 'display' control panel to show the images as
Windows wallpaper...

Now, whenever someone tours our area and walks past the server room, they
are greeted by the Pentium II snail on one screen and the beautiful iMac
in Bondi blue and ice on the other. Believe me, people notice!

In the 6 November 1998 issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine, David
Bowie is interviewed about his ISP venture, BowieNet
<http://www.davidbowie.com/>.

A picture of him on p. 10 of their "e.w. internet" insert is going up in
my cubicle tomorrow. He's in a hammock with David Pogue's "Macs for
Dummies" book open across his stomach, and on p. 12 of the insert, you'll
find this quote:

"Asked about his system of choice, Bowie fairly shouts, 'Macintosh! I
mean, come on!'"

Sounds like an AppleMaster to me!
